Do not want, if only because it would probably get neutered in negotiations the same way MK vs. DC did.
If someone could maybe convince Microsoft to reactivate the Killer Instinct IP, however, MK vs. KI would be pretty amusing, even if it had to be a console exclusive. |

This could not work period, for multiple reasons. First, their gameplay is completely different from one another, so either SF fans or MK fans will complain their characters don't feel the same. Visual styles are polar opposites, MK fans will b**** & moan that their characters have been neutered, and on and on.
I think Boon was mentioning a "in a perfect world" scenario, not so much a "this would be a great idea" type thing. |

Seeing as how fighting games (seemingly) aren't nearly as popular nowadays as they once were...why not? Might as well go crazy and have as many "vs." games out there possible to keep the genre interesting.
As for a Street Fighter vs. Mortal Kombat game "not working"...thats rubbish, they could figure a way to match these titles up gameplaywise, can't be THAT diffacult. |

Never been big on these versus games. Always feels weird the characters they have to change up to make them work. If Capcom vs SNK didn't do it for me then I fear Street Fighter vs Tekken when they are even more different from each other. King of Fighters at least had some SF clones and vice versa to have a little bit of similarity.

Street Fighter projectile attacks block each other. If your opponent tosses a projectile and you throw one too, they meet in the middle and cancel each other out. Mortal Kombat's projectiles are "invisible" to one another so both players can be hit by projectiles in an exchange, and various projectiles do different amounts of damage and side effects (i.e. Scorpion's Harpoon). This is an EXTREME gameplay changer, because Scorpion normally cannot win projectile exchanges in MK, whereas Sub-Zero nearly always wins those exchanges. No matter which way you pick for the gameplay, the proponderance of characters who have projectiles in both rosters means that the side that doesn't get it's "native" ruleset will have its balance and gameplay style altered drastically. Take projectile canceling away from characters like Dhalsim from Street Fighter and they become vastly weaker. Putting it in for characters strengthens Scorpion while weakening Sub-Zero. Yes, you "could" give new moves and/or re-balance other moves to make up for it, but doing so makes those characters no longer play like they "should". Only characters with no projectiles would remain unaffected by the transition (and there's precious few of those in the MK roster... the only one I can think of offhand that doesn't have one is Kenshi). |

That is the reason why there are two versions of both Capcom vs SNK and Street Fighter X Tekken. In a world where Street Fighter versus Mortal Kombat exists, it would balance just fine and there would be two versions. With each version emphasizing the play style of that developer.

It can't do any more damage to Mortal Kombat than that last abortion in April did. And trust me, Ed Boon has shown that if it's a completely asinine and stupid idea that will damage MK's name and legacy, then he's certainly all for it. Why do they even have to talk about these stupid crossovers anyway? They never work and they only cheapen and damage both properties associated with them.

Street Fighter X Tekken (and Tekken X Street Fighter) works OK because the vast, vast majority of Tekken characters do not have projectile attacks. They don't care about the projectile rules, and most of them can sidestep in any case to avoid projectiles. SNK games use the same fireball-war general mechanics that Street Fighter uses, so there's not too many drastic differences there. |

How would Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat characters not play almost exactly the same in either game? They both have unblockables. They both have super bars.
In Street Fighter vs Mortal Kombat, projectiles cancel. In Mortal Kombat vs Street Fighter, projectiles have predetermined speeds. Problem solved. |

The only stumbling block I see for this happening is fatalities. While I suppose that a Street Fighter X Mortal Kombat title could logically do away with them, I can't see it working the other way around. I also don't see Capcom signing up to co-produce an M rated fighter. Depending how the upcoming X titles pan out, I think a Tekken X Dead or Alive X Street Fighter (in some variation) would be far more intriguing.

I mean it died in terms of being anything resembling good. Mortal Kombat 9 is the biggest turd dump of a game since Superman 64 from the late 90's. In fact it is 2011's version of Superman 64.

I'd agree with EVO, but then we'd both be wrong so I won't. The game needs to be completely rebuilt and it needs a new storyline. That is one of MANY major faults with this game is that its story is nothing but a re-hash and I said this in June 2010 and I stick to it now, once the nostalgia of this game wears off, people will see how big of a dungheap it really is. In reading several MK related message boards, I'm starting to be proven right. Honestly, calling it Mortal Kombat 9 is giving it too much credit. The game should simply be called Mortal Kombat: Rehash because promoting it as anything else is/was false advertising.
Unless the cheapness of the difficulty, stiff to nearly unusable controls, and rehashed storyline are addressed and fixed, then God will be doing us a great mercy if there is no MK 10. Last edited by yojoeski; 11-05-2011 at 12:55 AM. |
