Default Deadliest Catch Falling Apart

A trio of stars of Discovery's hit reality series "Deadliest Catch" have left the show.

Capts. Johnathan and Andy Hillstrand -- who were sued earlier this month by Discovery for allegedly not performing work on a planned spinoff special -- as well as Capt. Sig Hansen, said in a statement Tuesday that they were "unable" to continue on the series due to the litigation.

"We have been through a lot over the past year and unfortunately given the current situation with Discovery we are unable to continue participating in 'Deadliest Catch,'" the three crab fishermen said in a joint written statement. "It has been a fantastic ride, and we wish the best to all of the amazing and supportive 'Catch' fans we have met over the years."

A statement from Discovery was not forthcoming.

The network sued the Hillstrands for $3 million claiming they failed to show up to finish work on "Hillstranded," a planned "Catch" spinoff. The Hillstrands' lawyer Jeff Cohen then called the suit an attempt to "extort" his clients and said the lawsuit could force them to sell their boats and fire their crews. Hansen, also repped by Cohen, later weighed in, backing the Hillstrands, slamming Discovery and saying, "I want people to know the captains stand together, and me and my brothers support them 100 percent."

Hansen, captain of the Northwestern, has been a fixture on "Catch" since its first season premiered in 2005. The Hillstrands, captains of the Time Bandit, joined in Season 2. Filming on the seventh season of the Emmy-nominated series is scheduled to begin as crab season starts in October. But barring any reconciliation, it now appears the show will be down three captains (in addition to Capt. Phil Harris, who died earlier this year).

It's too bad, but I guess all good things have to come to an end.

Yeah I'm not sure it has enough leg left to keep me watching. Too many familiar faces leaving at once. Sig was kind of a dick but he could make money and I liked the Hillstrands.

I'm with you there. I think the Hillstrands were retiring anyway, and then Capt. Phil passed away. It would've been way different either way, with or without Sig.

I wonder if they'll end up canning the series, or just looking for new crews to follow around. It had to be a serious cash cow for Discovery, having been on the air for 7 years. I know the Harris kids re-signed... maybe they'll get their own show or something.

I think it's time to leave well enough alone. Let the show go out where it currently is. With Sig leaving too, who's really left?

I think the show should end but it's too popular so they'll probably just get new captains. I really liked the Hillstrands and captain Sig, and obviously captain Phil. I really don't like any of the remaining people. I don't mind Phil's older son but he younger son was kind of a punk with a very entitled attitude. Maybe his dad's death and rehab have changed him though. I never liked Keith, the captain of the Wizard, who tried to steal crew members from other ships.

What I hope they don't do is go out into the fleet and try to find more boisterous captains who will play it up for ratings. Part of the charm is the honesty of the show. Discovery has to be reeling now that the wheels are falling off of their little darling. None of the other fishing or reality shows they have hold a candle to DC.

I'd like to know more about what happened with The Hillstrands special that Discovery is suing them over. Why did they refuse to finish filming it? From the sounds of it they had finished all of principal filming and just had to do some interviews.

I understood that they were supposed to do a special separate from the show and didn't want to do it. It was to be called Hillstranded.

I'm guessing that's what they'll do. I don't see them cancelling the show, at least for the upcoming season.

TMZ is reporting the Hillstrands and Sig Hansen have worked out their differences with Discovery and will return to the show for the next season. They released a statement saying "We're happy we worked everything out with Discovery. A deal's a deal. We're heading up to Dutch Harbor to start filming the new season of 'Deadliest Catch' and hopefully it will be the best one yet."

Edit: TMZ says the Hillstrands will finish their special that they had previously walked off of, causing Discovery to sue them.

Mike Rowe.. haha.

Well that's good news anyway. I wonder if they are still moving forward with "Hillstranded".

Drug Investigation on 'Deadliest Catch' Boat
Quote:
The fishing boat featured on the reality show "Deadliest Catch" was the subject of a police search earlier this month after the captain called cops claiming one of the stars had been abusing drugs on board ... this according to law enforcement.

The Unalaska Department of Public Safety (Unalaska is a city in Alaska, weird ...we know) tells TMZ ... police responded to the famous "Cornelia Marie" on November 5, 2010 after receiving a call from Captain Derek Ray.

We're told Ray -- who took over the boat after the death of Captain Phil Harris -- told cops Phil's son Jake Harris (a deckhand on the boat) had been abusing prescription drugs while at sea.

Officials tell us ... cops searched the boat and found "paraphernalia" -- but not enough evidence to connect Jake to a crime.

Cops interviewed everyone on the boat -- but so far, no arrests have been made.

I enjoyed watching the latest episode...the rescue right out of Dutch Harbor was pretty dramatic.
