Default Is WB pulling a Disney Vault with the Harry Potter franchise?

I was just on the Ultimate Disney site and noticed this:
http://www.dvdizzy.com/index.html
Quote:
September 21, 2011... Warner has announced a November 11th video debut for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2... Following this holiday season, the entire franchise will be going on moratorium, disappearing from stores indefinitely.
Huh? Is Warner Bros. pulling a Disney Vault with the Harry Potter franchise?

It's called enticing people into buying the movies NOW, which will drive up already good holiday sales and clearing shelves for future, more "complete" sets.

I find that kind of hard to believe since they still have to do the Ultimate Editions for 7a and 7b... Which I would assume would be planned for sometime in 2012.

They've been doing this for a while. The original versions on Blu are pretty difficult to find. Target had an exclusive reprint, then the ultimate editions.. it's smart to pull them from shelves after they release the full collection.

Ugh.

I've been waiting for all 27 movies or whatever it is before I plunk down money on a set.

I quite like the series but am about 3 movies behind, not really a rabid follower. Definitely appreciate 'em.

Is this years 1-6 or just Deathly Hallows part one and two?

It said "entire franchise" on Ultimate Disney.

Just to point out, they will still be releasing the last 2 Ultimate Editions in 2012, I'm assuming they are not releasing anymore "regular" Blu-rays of the films

Its because they're going to re-release the franchise 10 years from now with the Super Turbo Championship Edition!

Nah, I think what they'll do is WB will figure they don't have a cash cow so no later than 2013 they will start work on a remake/reboot of the series.

Sadly you just know there are studio people already seriously talking about this.

Nah, no rebooting needed. They will just start with Albus Severus Potter arriving at Hogwarts and being sorted into Slytherin. He's going to be best friends with Draco Malfoy's son.

This is good news. I'm tired of all the releases/re-releases/etc... that Warner is pulling for years.

Anyone that wants Harry Potter already has. I'm still waiting for the proper full set of the Ultimate Editions.

Are you referring to the last two yet to release UEs or one huge UE boxset?

i'm sure lots of folks who knew there would be a series of movies waited for the last one to be released and will simply buy the boxed set of all of them. i have all the movies except the last 3 on HD-DVD and i purchased just one of the remaining 3 mentioned on blu. i will be one of the folks buying the entire boxed set on blu once it's released. if only HD-DVD had lasted til after the release of the full boxked set, DAMN!

EDIT: I just saw this is up for pre-order. guess i'll be picking it up and NO i won't double dip for the uber, super, duper unreleased, private stash of lost footage directors cut platinum edition boxed set either!

yeah i know, i say that now, right...

Hmmmmmm...

Well, if they were hoping for this to entice sales, I guess it kind of worked. After reading this, I just ordered Deathly Hallows Part 1 from Amazon on Blu-Ray and preordered part 2.

I'll probably kick myself in the butt later, but whatever.

I was going to hold off for a box set of hopefully all of the ultimate editions, which I will still get when/if it ever comes out.

I originally swore to myself that I wouldn't buy any of the movies on Blu-Ray at all until all of them are out in one big set. My wife and I have 1-5 on DVD. I already broke the no-BD rule when 6 came out. I was at the time going to just get the DVD, but when the Blu-Ray combo pack was on sale on Amazon for $1 cheaper than the plain DVD version, it didn't make much sense to spend more to get less.

I wasn't going to buy the Deathly Hallows movies at all until a mega box set of all of the movies came out. But I want to get the ultimate box set when it (hopefully) comes out, and I don't want to get the bare-bones set that apparently is coming out for the holidays this year. It will probably be next year at the soonest that we get some kind of ultimate set, and I know that my wife won't want to wait that long just to be able to watch the last 2 movies again.

So, I'll get these for now. At least we will be able to watch all of the movies in some form in the mean time until an ultimate set hopefully eventually comes out.

Check out Amazon.co.uk and save a few bucks (nearly half, actually). You'll just have to wait a few more weeks since it doesn't come out til 12/2/11.

This is apparently happening December 29, 2011:

Quote:
This is a surprise move in terms of timing rather than action. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has made an announcement that as of December 29th this year, the studio will stop shipping all copies of the "Harry Potter" films on DVD and Blu-ray.

The move is akin to Disney Studios with their animated film titles, releasing them on DVD and Blu-ray and then pulling them off shelves a year later to increase both their value and interest in a re-release.

The key difference here however is "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2". The last of the Potter films hits shelves on November 11th meaning both it and the 'Complete 8-Film Collection' box set will only be available for a short window - just under two months.

With this move it's likely we'll see some sort of special edition DVD & Blu-ray sets offered down the track either late next year or in 2013
http://www.darkhorizons.com/news/221...s-being-pulled

I bet this is the reason why Best Buy had several of the Potter movies as part of their "Deal of the Day" yesterday...they're trying to get rid of copies in the stores before they have to pull them.
