Default Panasonic going neutral ? I guess not !

for the first time for about a month or so i was checking avm$ forum, and stumbled about this http://www.edn.com/article/CA6486341.html.

As i read it, and i guess i am reading it correctly, it means high-def ( upscaling ) dvd-recorders and not hd-dvd recorders, because it refers to HD DVD and not the proper spelling of the loosing format HD-DVD (notice the difference ).

But the folks over there are allready freaking out about panasonic going neutral, yeahh riiigghhtt.

It means a recorder that can record in high definition. The medium is Blu-ray.

Alternatively, they may have misunderstood the "Blu-ray HD DVD recorder" or something in the Japanese press release. "HD DVD recorder" is a common way to refer to a DVD recorder with a built-in hard drive.

Don't worry, Panasonic is firmly in the Blu-ray camp. In fact, in Japan, Panasonic is generally considered the big boss of the Blu-ray side. (Sony is the foot soldier. )

enjoy

It is this quote from that article that is feeding them:

Quote:
The company's choice to make both Blu-ray and HD products puts it in the same format-neutral camp as Intel Corp. in terms of the buzzed-about "format wars" between Blu-ray and HD DVD. Last month, Intel announced fifth-generation 45-nm Centrino mobile platform codenamed Montevina that will contain native support for both HD DVD and Blu-ray media when it launches next year.
That statement can't be interpreted any other way and should be retracted if incorrect.

I have never ever seen HD DVD spelt HD-DVD. It always has a space. I doubt Panasonic is going neutral. The just took Mickey Mouse around with them to show off blu-ray.

Yes it's incorrect. The site has a comment feature - I suggest people make use of it and give them feedback. They're taking it from this article: http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/av/do...1002/pana1.htm

Notice how HD DVD isn't mentioned anywhere?

No need to worry!

The high-definition DVD recorders XW300, XW100 and XW200V have built-in high-definition receivers in order to record (on HDD, DVD or SD) high-definition programs transmitted either via the Japanese digital terrestrial system or via satellite.

They are not HD DVD recorders...

All new Panasonic's BD/DVD/HDD recorders and DVD/HDD recorders have build-in H.264 HD encoder. Those are capable of recording HD programs from digital terrestrial/digital satellite to HDD or BD, now even on DVD using H.264 encoder and new format so called "AVCREC". Available selection of bitrate are 12.9Mbps, 8.6Mbps and 5.7Mbps. If 5.7Mbps is chosen, it can record 1 hour 40 min. HD programs on a SL DVD-R, and 18 hours on a DL BD-R.

It's totally irrelevant to the losing format "HD DVD" . AVCREC is a variant of BDAV format, like AVCHD is a variant of BDMV format.

Those recorder can record by H.264 directly from the air, or user can record broadcast HD MPEG2 to the internal HDD first, then let it transcodes to H.264 on demand, or at night (during it being turned off).

The big question is if they can record to H264 in real time from a non-HDCP HDMI type input?

That would be really interesting
