United Kingdom Barfly (Mickey Rourke, Faye Dunaway, Barbet Schroeder, Nov 2024)

Wow, I don't think it even had a DVD in the UK. I imported the old extras-filled US DVD. Never had a Blu-ray in the UK or USA.

Great film I have the Imprint release https://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=31309

One of Cannon's best films with Love Streams and Runaway Train.

Faye Dunaway documentary https://www.theguardian.com/film/art...entary-hbo-max has a fair bit on the film. She seemed proud of it.

There's loads of extras out there so it'll be interesting to see what 88 Films comes up with. I see they're having a DVD not sure about the market for that.

Yeah this seems to be one completely forgotten about in the UK, good on 88 for giving it it’s due.

The mucho deniro from Imprint is worth it for the four hour long Bukowski Tapes documentary.

That artwork is terrible also, straight out of the Arrow Films 'that'll do' aesthetic.

Yes, the Charles Bukowski Tapes are amazing especially getting them all in the one place (although they've been on US DVD for years and Carlotta France have a release too). They're broken up on Youtube obviously and although a couple of Germany releases (and the old Shock Australia release) had "The Charles Bukowski Tapes" I'm pretty sure they'd been cut down in length from 240mins to 65mins or more).

Imprint have a standard edition now https://viavision.com.au/shop/barfly...ndard-edition/ sans Bukowski.

I remember getting the US DVD it was in one of those snapper cases I sold it for bat shit crazy money when it went OOP years ago. All the extras (commentary and old featurette) are on both Imprint releases. Schroeder has a real love affair with his film and Bukowski he apparently threatened to cut off his finger if front of Menahem Golan if he didn't fund the film.

There was some legal problems with Warner and the old MGM for the UK & North America and I guess it was only really ironed out in the last few years.

I have something somewhere in my dust collection autographed by Bukowski I think it's either a script for Barlfy or a promo booklet from Cannon.

Check out the background image pinned on the wall:

Schroeder & Bukowski

That image wasn't them taking the piss out of Golan-Globus from what I recall I think the both of them were pretty happy with Barfly (and the money) and Golan-Globus totally left them alone. Which was very rare.

As someone who already has the Imprint release, I'll double dip if 88 manages to put Born into This on disc, or something of that caliber. I doubt it, but I'd love to see it happen.

Unexpected, but nevertheless good to see it picked up (not unlike Matewan, to give another example). Not in a rush but will definitely grab this at some point soon.

Not watched it yet but managed to bag the MoC DVD not long ago. Shame it never got a Blu-ray upgrade over here.

Extras are up. Even if this will likely have a stronger encode, I am in no way tempted to resell my Imprint release and get this. https://88-films.myshopify.com/produ...-la-gorge-copy

Pre-order: 88 Films

Quote:
Hollywood royalty Faye Dunaway and Mickey Rourke deliver career best performances in this semi-autobiographical movie based on the life of author and poet Charles Bukowski. Set in the seediest part of LA, impoverished writer Henry (Rourke) and kept woman Wanda (Dunaway) cross paths and discover they have one thing in common, alcohol. These desperate and disparate souls drown their sorrows each night, ignoring chances which will remove them from this empty lives. Dark with a bitter aftertaste, Barfly captures the worst moments of human existence and how it can be destroyed by the love of the (not so) good stuff.

See they've dropped the booklet and replaced it with something more appropriate:

I can only reiterate what others have said about how long this took to get a release over here and how expensive the Region 1 DVD was years ago ; I remember it being £80 at the cheapest at one point... used! After years of waiting for a good release (I remember hearing that the German disc had playback issues), I caved in and ordered that supa dupa box set from Imprint and while it cost about £60, I don't regret it at all ; it's a beaut of a box set! Along with the Bukowski tapes, it also has a great, though slightly sad interview from Frank Stallone, who bemoans that if I got a job each time somebody told him he was great in Barfly, he'd be a much richer man/bigger star... He really is something of a revelation in the film, though its not a huge part.
