UPDATE 2: Possible Reference To The Last Of Us Found in Uncharted 3 Drake's Deception

The latest installment in the Uncharted series by SCEA developer Naughty Dog hosts a suspicious reference to a "deadly fungus". Coincidence?

As reported a few days back, a snippet from a BBC wildlife film documenting the behavior of the "killer fungi" known as "cordyceps" was posted at www.lastofus.com, a website for a "PS3 exclusive you won't believe", that will be revealed during the upcoming Spike TV VGAs.

Well, while hunting for treasures on my Crushing run at Uncharted 3, I've stumbled upon this newspaper laying on the counter of the London pub featured in the very first chapter of the game.

The front page of a fictional newspaper, called "The Overseer", runs a story with the following headline: "Scientists are still struggling to understand deadly fungus".

Isn't it a rather odd coincidence that out of all the fake headlines Naughty Dog could have come up with, they eventually went with one so closely referring to The Last Of Us?

Yup. I haven't played the others, but the fusion of cinema style story telling, RPG game play, and a good edgy story really hooked me with that game.

Or, maybe it could be something like Metal Gear Solid 5, but I doubt it would be exclusive.

Mmmh.. wouldn't believe because it's lame, or because it's awesome?
Geoff didn't specify, and we've had a few disappointments with grandiose teasers across the years...

In the "because it's lame"category:
- God of War 4 (we pretty much know it's coming at some point)
- Sony Smash Bros (it's been leaked already)
- pretty much any sequel to existing franchises .. we know it's coming
- Some kind of kid or family friendly Move game
- The Last Guardian presented officially (don't get me wrong, I'd love to see more of this game, but we kinda ... know it's coming)


in the "because it's awesome" category
- FF VII remake
- New Heavenly Sword developed directly by Santa Monica with an even improved version of the GoW3 engine
- New Final Fantasy Tactics, Parasite Eve, Kingdom Hearts, Resident Evil or MGS5 exclusive (doubtful, 3rd party games)
- Agent FINALLY revealed and it's awesome
- The Getaway resurrected

Considering the game was officially announced by Hideo Kojima at MS's E3 press conference 2 years ago, yeah I'd say its confirmed. Gee, you are way behind.

Here's the problem with this tease. Unless its a long awaited, but previously unconfirmed sequel (Kingdom Hearts 3 or Heavenly Sword 2), or a next-gen remake of a beloved PSOne title (FFVII, Silent Hill, MGS), its gonna be a huge let down. Unless the obvious sequel announcement (GTA V, RE 6, etc...) is that its now a PS3 exclusive (no more gimped ports FTW).

Could Valve's recent kiss-&-make up w/ Sony and Sony's embrace of Steam lead to a Half-Life 3 exclusivity for consoles?

Personally, nothing short of a new Earthworm Jim game will be a letdown.
