retaliers still show 8-10 thru 8-17 but maybe they didnt get the memo yet.

I know in the past sony style has gotten products after B&M stores. such as their latest upconvert players. BBY had them almost 2 mo. before sonystyle even showed it.

Good.

Considering the sort of blunder the early BR releases have had...at this point, my attitude is: Delay everything until you can have a REAL, ball busting launch with the codecs in place, great film transfers, the works.

I wouldn't bother with the Samsung or any of this early BR stuff until that criteria is met myself.

Samsung has never yet made a good DVD player so I'm not surprised that their BR player leaves something to be desired.

But it's not all the player's fault. Putting out ho-hum film transfers is inexcuseable even with "just" MPEG2 and "just" BD-25 or whatever the heck it is right now.

Remember: This is all strictly early adopter time. When you have early adopters starting to get their hackles riled...yeah, Sony and the BDA fumbled the ball here in the short term.

They need to come out with full shock, awe, and nukes and do it right. If delaying everyting to October is what it takes? So be it.

It honestly doesn't even feel like BR has truly launched to me.

I was hoping that's what was planned with the summer launch before everything went to hell.

Sure sign of a bad launch when even a longtime Blu-ray supporter such as yourself says this.

I didn't.

They left the Samsung ass out in the breeze with a handful of titles. It looked and felt like a glorified feeler setup.

Meanwhile, you get into August (and now possibly later) and suddenly more hardware shows up along with software.

It really didn't look like a full launch to me.

Boy...I didn't expect to be THIS right.

Facts are facts.

What can I tell you?

I've never bashed the HD-DVD format itself and I've tried to be very open minded and fair, but I've made no secret that I've been VERY disappointed...bitterly so...when we found out that we were going to have this format war at all.

On paper, I love both formats. On paper, I still think BR easily has more going for it, especially if they go past MPEG2.

On paper doesn't mean a hill of beans when you churn out what's on the streets right now.

Remember its not just sony orchestrating this whole launch thing. Its all the companies. I hope they turn it around because there is little argument about the fact that blu-ray does have better techonology behind it. We just need to see a good codec with some nice hd transfers and some good players, then it'll be off to the races for blu-ray because hd-dvd isn't going to be able to scale up the disc size nearly as quickly as blu ray can. Also remember its not that hard for the studios to print HD DVDs since it uses basicly the same manufacturing process as standard dvd's do, while on the other hand blu-ray discs require a compeley new manufacturing process which costs the studios money and takes time to get working correctly. My prediction is by the end of the year or perhaps early next year will see blu-ray doing very well and hd-dvd struggling to catch up to the larger blu-ray discs. Remember all those HD DVD's are already using both layers the current blu-ray ones are only single layers.

Sony may not be orchestrating every single aspect of the launch, but they are the ones releasing all these crappy first-run discs. I agree that they cannot help that Samsung came out with a player that's just as crappy.

Thumbs up Reason for delay - per Sony Style employee

I'm in Las Vegas on a business trip and have made a couple of visits to the local Sony Style store here. They have a very nice setup and demo of Blu-ray by the way. The first day that I checked out Blu-ray a store employee offered to let me pre-order the new Sony player which would be out in August. I said I'd probably order it online or locally and thanked him anyway. Yesterday I paid them another visit and saw the same employee. He recognized me from before. He was very knowledgeable and helpful about Blu-ray. He mentioned that they had just gotten word that the Blu-ray player was delayed until September or October. He was quick to say that it wasn't a problem with Sony or the Blu-ray format or player itself. I couldn't get him to volunteer any more information but I think that I guessed correctly when I said "Is it an HDMI issue?" I think Sony is delaying to incorporate the latest updates to HDMI and for full playback of the new audio formats. I for one can wait a couple more months if it means that my new $1000 player will not be obsolete right out of the box. I think this is a good thing. HD-DVD is really a non-launch anyway. When Blu-ray launches full-force it will be all over then.

You make some good points, but we even have some people here that will probably disagree with you right now, at this point in time.

HD-DVD, despite its medicore hardware and tepid studio support...has had a nice launch and has won round 1, such as it is.

Why?

Because thus far, the BR launch has really been the non-launch you speak of.

Frankly, I view October as the REAL launch of BR. When you see the other players come out and you see better discs than the trash they've put out thus far...THAT is the real BR launch.

At this point, with this early blunder, it behooves the entire BDA to have a solidified, unified hardware/software launch and come out with shocke and awe when they do. Don't bother until you can get it right.

I honestly wish they had not allowed the Samsung player or these discs to be released at all. It was a mistake. They may as well have waited until October, or whenever, and release it all on the same page, when it was ready for prime time.

What we have right now couldn't be further from it.

Until October, at least...HD-DVD is going to continue to gain ground and support and it's not really because of HD-DVD kicking a lot of ass and taking names. It's because the BDA just gave them a free boost with a blunder and they simply can't continue to give the opposition free gifts like this.

Like I've been saying: Think in terms of football.

BR has fumbled the ball early on and HD-DVD picked it up off the ground. It's an interception for a first down.

There's at least three quarters left to go in the entire game and no one has scored a touchdown yet.

I suspect the touchdowns will not happen until the holiday season, if we're going to see any TD's at all in 2006.

Yeah, Sony is relying on the PS3 to put Blu-ray into households.

I wouldn't be surprised if having an OCT player release will help ramp up their production of PS3s for their near simultaneaous launch in US/Japan/Europeon.

With the PS3 annouced as having HDMI 1.3, this delay now makes perfect sense.

No way their $1K stand alone player does not have 1.3, when the PS3 will.

Wonder if Sony's new tvs will also delay.

This is typical of any format war. Shots get fired. Some hits. Some misses.

I'd much rather see the blunders happen now and get fixed vs. a botch late in the game that equals death.

I'm sorry, but why should we let Sony get a second chance? How many people in this world get to make a second chance for messing up the first one? Why does Sony deserve any different?

Default I'm waiting for Panasonic

I think that i'll wait for Panasonic. Their products are definitely the best of quality. HDMI 1.3 too.

http://www.avland.co.uk/panasonic/dmpbd10/dmp-bd10.htm

Blu-ray needs to use MPEG-4 on dual layer discs too with dolby digital. Once that happens... its over.

Don't be sorry, don't give Sony another chance if that is how you feel. However, don't blast the entire BDA because of movies released by Sony. If you don't like the current releases, then fine, give the 6 other players that will be coming out by the BDA their fair billing along with the other movie releases to follow.

Remember, Blu-ray is not a one pony show (Sony),...they have tons of manufacturers backing it up, and this will soon be apparent in the coming months.
