Default To buy or not to buy... that is THE question!

I know that the 'Spiderman' trilogy on Blu-ray is going to be a massive counter balance title to the "supposed" HD DVD 'Transformers' success. And I have been debating my intentions with regards to the purchase of this set.

On one hand, I know that my opinions of the trilogy stand steadfast in the face of popular opinion. The first sucked, the second was better and showed some promise (I actually appreciated what they were able to accomplish and it almost justified the first film... I stress the word ALMOST), and the third was a bigger waste of time than the first.

On the other hand, I know that having the trilogy handy for potential group gatherings would be highly beneficial... after all, like I said earlier, the popular opinion is astoundingly "two thumbs up". Thus, being able to show a High Definition version of the trilogy would be beneficial in possibly converting any guests to the Blu-ray camp.

So, the debate I've been hammering between the left & right hemispheres of my brain is whether or not to take one for the team and purchase a trilogy I personally don't go gah-gah over, but can enjoy to some meager extent. And, if I don't purchase it then I feel like I may miss out on the Blu-ray onslaught that will not only stomp on HD DVDs 'Transformer' gloating (which is inevitable no matter what the numbers say) but also help, once more, to secure Blu-ray as the undeniable format preference of the masses.

P.S. I do believe that I am currently sitting at 90% in favour of purchasing the trilogy... Hehehe

My opinion may be biased on this one, as I have been a huge Spidey fan for years, and the amount of Spiderman paraphenalia I've collected over the years (including comics, clothing, toys, cartoons, etc.), but I think you should go ahead and pick this trilogy up. I may even have a way (lame as it might be) of justifying the purchase.

Let's say you enjoyed Spider-man 2 enough to want it on Blu-ray (don't forget the inclusion of the seamless branching version of 2.1). So, if you know you'll pick up SM2 at the very least, you may as well pick up 1 and 3 just so you can say you have the complete set. Kind of like how original trilogy Star Wars fans explain how the prequels ended up in their collection.

It should be noted as well... as big of a Spider-man fan as I am, I tend to agree with you about SM3. I saw SM1 and 2 in theaters multiple times each, yet could not muster the enthusiasm to see SM3 in theaters for even a second time.

this will certainly be an eye candy festival. i think most agree that the movie pearl harbor was not that good. however, the movie itself was a visual feast. given that you aren't a fan of the movies, if you want to have something that is visually stunning, go for it.

Buy it if you want it. Otherwise don't. Pretty simple.

Not to piss anyone off, but companies look at quarter reports and won't decide a course of action by any given day or movie. In fact, if anything, they'll discount a day as special and remove it from the thinking process.

I'm buying the trilogy because I want it and not because of some mediocre movie that's but a blip on the map (Transformers).

If I was going to entertain people and wanted to show off my system, I would buy a movie that's the best regardless if I liked it or not.

However, there are plenty of movies on BLU that will work, so there's no reason to buy stuff you don't want.

Although I recently bought Payback for no apparent reason. I have like 50 BLUs now. It's a damn addiction.

Good lord... that's the kind of irrational behaviour that makes up most of the HD DVD camp members (no offense). What on Earth would possess you to do such a thing? The third installement is the only one you should consider avoiding! The only reason I would buy the trilogy is for the first two films. With the prices of individual titles, you would essentially get the third for free since it would come to $60 for the first two anyhow.

Fair enough... even I have questionable taste in my library that people criticise me for. In that respect, I can understand where you are coming from.

Could you do me a favour though? Remember what I am about to tell you, because I don't want to have to say it again. If you invite me over to watch it with you, the answer is a big fat resounding NO THANK YOU! LOL

I am Canadian and I think the third Spiderman film was the worst one out of them all. It was all over the place. The only reason Venom was put in it was due to the screaming fan base demanding him in it and so the director/producer had to somehow put him in the film. And the casting for Venom, Topher Grace, IMO was not the greatest choice.

I'd have to set getting the Trilogy is a much wiser decision than Spiderman 3 by itself, but thats just me.

I compare Spiderman 3 to X-Men 3 Last Stand, another terrible third installment. BUT then you ll see people writing 'Why did they both still make so much money?' and the answer is simple, in order to say that a movie is 'bad' you first have to spend the money to go see it

Petra... IMHO, the best way to ensure Blu-ray will fail is to buy crap you don't want. If we resort to those tactics, then the whole thing is just a "house-of-cards" and will implode on itself.

The format needs to succeed based on the merits of the format. And it is doing that quite nicely.

Second... You don't need to impress Sony. It's their format. They're not going to wake up tomorrow and go "neutral".

EDIT: As an over 40 yr old adult....no I would not buy this except my kids enjoy it. So it's a sale for me in that regard. I would opt for say Die Hard and that's where my wallet would go to support the format. No need to do any foolish buying.

I don't know where all the hate for SM 3 comes from. I really liked it. Hey, you have to admit it was at least better than the 80's live action TV series.

agreed, i think a lot more people like it than you think...if u don't like the movie, you may be biased into thinking others don't...spiderman 1 was immensely popular, i do not know how anyone could say general consensus on that was it sucking...it was pretty damn good...the second one was pretty equal to it, though in my opinion not quite as good..

with regard to the third one, I thought it was the best...very complicated, with lots of emotional roller coasters (sorry if it was too complicated for you, or if u don't feel u can handle the romantic side of spidermans life-these are the two criticisms i often hear for it)...

i don't think there were too many villains, it just showed how much spidey could take! spiderman 3 was my fave (i especially liked green goblin coming back and helping his former friend int he end..gave me goosebumps)..
