Default Why do most New Releases use DTS-HD audio rather than Dolby TrueHD?

It seems like almost every BD released now is encoded using DTS-HD audio. It doesn't seem like many studios use Dolby TrueHD anymore. Why is that?

Two reasons. With a Dolby TrueHD track, you have to encode a seperate Dolby Digital track for systems without lossless support. DTS-HD has a lossy core which can be extracted in those cases. DTS also has faster encoders than Dolby, and as we all know, time is money, so studios prefer DTS there also.

It has also been a long time since I've seen a new release Blu-Ray title that uses PCM Uncompressed Audio as the Audio Format as well.

The DTS-HD Audio Format is fantastic I think. With DVD and I'm assuming back with Laserdisc, DTS Audio usually sounded superior than Dolby Digital Audio.

Because DTS-HD MA always sounds better/richer despite the mathematics stating the two codecs should sound identical.

[Show spoiler]I love poking a hornets nest with this stick.

PCM 5.1 (uncompressed) sounds just as good DTS-HD 5.1 MA, if not equal.

Exactly. There is no audible difference between Linear PCM, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS-HD Master Audio. Also, some of you need to remember that higher volume does not mean better sound, which tends to happen with DTS-HD MA tracks and then the sound is too low for dialogue.

Don't know, don't care, as long as the same sequence of 1s and 0s is coming out of my PS3 it doesn't affect my life.

I've adjusted volume to compensate for the auto dial normalization on TrueHD many times and TrueHD still always sounds a fraction on the flat side. PCM and DTS HD MA always ignite the room!

Mine seems opposite? meaning that DTS-HD sounds great but for some reason when I notice dialog being faint & look at the Blu it tends to be D-TrueHD? Might be me needing to re-calibrate as I've moved a few things, None-the-less its noticable (Now), It wasnt in my old room?? Hmmm <slapping forehead>

I adjusted my center channel to be 2 db higher than it was originally set for it made a big difference.

<now running back & forth fiddling>

<Thinking> Why did I start this now? I'm about to get off the cpu & watch a movie

Not bad; 2db sounds pretty good........ I'll leave it here & see what its like when I change movies... Its amazing what moving just a few things around can do.... Why i'm the only one who cares in my house IDK? It'll drive me nuts if the sound isnt perfect!

I also don't mind, as long as it's lossless. We still have big releases with Dolby TrueHD. Transformers: Dark of the Moon and Super 8 both have excellent 5-star Dolby TrueHD tracks. I think lossless codecs, all being equal, the movie's sound design is where it matters most.

Dolby TrueHD also has lossless Dolby Digital, but it's embedded instead of a extraction of the core track. Any receiver without Dolby TrueHD decoder will automatically get Dolby Digital.

+1. Transformers DOTM and Super 8 are two of the best movie soundtracks currently avaliable on Blu-ray. People need to get over the fact that, DTS dosen't mean "better than Dolby" as many have to come to think. It really comes down to the sound design/mix.

It's not the codec but the mixing that will determine how a film will sound.
