Default List of 4K UHD releases without a remastered Blu-ray (neither packaged nor separate)

This is suppsed to be a compilation of films that were remastered for their UHD Blu-ray release but the regular Blu-ray, either included with the UHD or re-released separately, has not been sourced from the newly created remaster but primarily carries over a previously existing transfer.

The idea is to list titles that would have deserved a remastered Blu-ray because of outdated masters, codecs or audio formats being used on previous releases.

I'll gladly take any suggestions for content to populate this thread going forward and also any input for improved layout/readability.

A Few Good Men

Batman Begins (BD received codec and audio update), The Dark Knight

Blade Runner: The Final Cut (Blu-ray was struck from 4K master but made use of VC-1 and didn't include an upgraded audio track; 4K set repackaged the previous disc)

Die Hard

Harry Potter 1-6 (HP3 onwards were finished at 2K DIs so HP1 and HP2 would mostly benefit. HP3 to HP6 had the VC-1 codec but arguably still have great picture and audio quality)

Inception

Jurassic Park 1-3 from the 1-4 set

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider: Cradle of Life

Mamma Mia!

Mission: Impossible 1-3 (according to first infos on the 4K UHD thread, the included BDs aren't even the Scandinavian re-releases with improved codec and audio formats)

The Mummy 1-3

The Patriot

The Prestige (Warner Bros. BD in Germany received codec and audio update)

Blade Runner and E.T. were both struck from the same 4K master on Blu-ray. I included Blade Runner because of old codec and missing audio upgrade. E.T., I think, doesn't qualify here.

A Few Good Men must have been a faux pas by Sony as they usually tend to include remastered Blu-ray or release them separately. Fury doesn't count because it's a recent release where both BD and UHD were struck from the same master but perhaps you are mentioning it because of the "black crush" angle?

Unhappy Disappointed

I was very disappointed to find out that Fox didn't include a remastered Blu-ray of DIE HARD; same thing with the first two JURASSIC PARK films from Universal, since they were directed by my favorite movie director, Steven Spielberg.

I mean, what are Fox and Universal thinking? Putting the new remasters on standard Blu-ray would have been the decent thing to do.

Yes, I was thinking of the black crush issue with Fury. I think the blu-ray in the set is the same old one from before, where the 4K disc fixes the problem... but I could be wrong.

HARRY POTTER 3-8 were all finished as 2K DIs, so I don't see any benefit from using the 4K uprezzes to release newly-mastered Blu-rays on those. The first two which were finished on film, though, could potentially show some improvements.

Gotcha. I didn't want to narrow it too much for this thread but the European Blu-rays (at least the German one I own) don't suffer from that black crush. My idea here was to go for that "no remastered version available anywhere" angle.

Good point. I've updated the info above to HP 1-6 because I've checked some screenshots and HP 1 and 2 most definitely deserve an upgrade. I've extended it to 3 to 6 because of the old VC-1 codec being on the Blu-rays but they do look very great even despite that fact.

It is now believed that the Predator trilogy will not contain remastered BDs with the UHDs from Fox. Just waiting on an official announcement.

No, the UHD release has the correct BD with it.

What about the Jack Ryan Collection? That set contains the old blu-rays, right?

At this point, I think it would be easier to make the opposite list - A list of UHDs that do contain a remastered blu ray, and which you can only get by obtaining the UHD release.

There seem to be fewer of those, and there will be even fewer as time goes by in comparison.

+1 to this. Otherwise you're eventually going to have practically everything on this list.

Yes, that's the most logical thing to do. Come to think of it, this thread already does it (when applicable).

You're right. I don't know if I can close this thread but I won't be updating it anymore going forward.

On a related note:
I have upgraded to a UHD (Sony UBP-X700) player and am very comfortable playing the UHD discs on my HDTV. I don't see any negative effects in HDR to SDR conversion so far and I even did several comparisons with UHD first and then the remastered Blu-ray disc (Unforgiven, for example) and the conversion works fine. For a long time I thought, UHDs wouldn't play on an HDTV but I was wrong and have since started to purchase select UHDs.

You’re still missing out on the main benefits of UHD. Have you considered at least looking for a somewhat budget conscious 4KTV? There are actually some pretty decent options out there now in the sub $1000 bracket.

I'm bumping this thread to include Vertigo, Rear Window, and The Birds. Only Psycho has received a remastered blu-ray to complement the UHD so far.
