Pinocchio. My favorite movie of the last 10 years. Just ordered the German 4k UHD release. Made me look at Matteo Garrone anew. Already had Gommorah and lately picked up Tale of Tales and Dogman, both on Artificial Eye, though Dogman lacks English subs. Really odd for a UK released blu.
Some Garrone on Italian released blus come with English subs so picking those up next; Reality and L'Imbalsamatore. Pinocchio though, utterly charming. Every oddball character just the right side of oddball. Has the best fairy ever committed to screen, the two actresses who played Fata Turchina and Fata Turchina bambina were equally amazing and heart-achingly beautiful. Gatto and Volpe were a terrific comic duo, impeccable timing. And Benigni as Gepetto gets his best screen role since the Hitchcockian murderer he played in Jarmusch's Night on Earth. And I haven't even mentioned the impatient gorilla judge, the maternal snail, the tired tuna fish or the incredulous cricket. ![]() |
