Default What's Up with "Movie Appeal"

How are the genre ratings determined? Because, like... a lot of them are bullcrap. It seems like the sort of thing the community would be able to vote on to give a balanced opinion, but I see no option for that.

I was wondering about this too.
It doesn't seem to be very... accurate or detailed.
Most things are just under "100% action" or "100% drama" and it makes it quite general.

I was also thinking that's just because it's new and it would fill out over time.
But, not sure how this information get there.

Example please?
Also, the Movie Appeal should not be purely read as what the movie contains, it should be read as, who will like this movie, which genre fans does it appeal to?

As a random example of what's being described above... Another Earth is listed as 100% Drama. No mention of any of the fantasy/sci-fi aspects of the film.

NCIS is also classified as more comedy then crime/mystery. NCIS may have some comedy moments I agree but is it no way more a comedy then crime/mystery.

Unfortunately I havent seen this title, but judging by the screenshots the sci-fi part only seems to play a minor part in the movie?

I think you are right, the problem here is that it hasn't been released on Blu-ray, so the movie appeal is therefore unreliable.

I guess I must be misunderstanding the purpose of this feature then. If the point is to just say "this movie is mostly drama", why do you need a feature with several options (and percentages)?

Why not just say "drama" at the top of the listing and move on?

This isn't something I use anyway, so I don't have a dog in the hunt... that's just the one I saw most recently that leapt out at me. While the movie is definitely more drama than sci-fi, the whole impetus for that drama is the discovery of a new planet... and the life on there (and specifically what kind of life it is) plays a large part in the overall plot and the motivations of the characters for the last half of the film.

It's not ray guns and bug-eyed aliens... but it seems to me that if this feature has any value at all, it would be to help classify a movie like this. It seems to be dropping the ball, making no differentiation between this and, say, The Color Purple.

EDIT: And I suppose I should point out that if the purpose is "who will like this movie, which genre fans does it appeal to", the very review on this site for Another Earth ends with:
Quote:
Recommended for fans of similar sci-fi ventures like Moon and Monsters.
"100% Drama" just doesn't seem to convey that at all.

Again, not something I use, so it doesn't bother me. I just don't understand the value, as currently implemented.

The idea with the Movie Appeal is that if you are a strong sci-fi fan (you like space ships, high-tech weapons, space travels, aliens etc) and you are contemplating seeing Another Earth, the Movie Appeal in this case tells you that you might want to consider other sci-fi movies first.

Another Earth is a newly released title though and the Movie Appeal is much more uncertain with new titles, so it's not unlikely that the sci-fi percentage will rise.

But what if I'm a strong drama fan? Appeal tells me this movie is right up my alley, and then I start seeing all of this stuff with people competing for trips to another planet, CNN interviews with aliens, alternative lives, and doppelgangers.

See my confusion about what this is supposed to do?

Well, then I think we're back to the original question:

Rise how? Is this accepting input from something/someone?

Again, not being combative here... more curiousity than anything else.
