Default 'Green Arrow' Series Coming to CW

Quote:
CW Moving Forward With 'Green Arrow' TV Series; Not A Spin-Off From 'Smallville'

The CW is finalizing a deal for a pilot order to Arrow, an hourlong superhero drama based on DC Comics’ Green Arrow. It is written and executive produced by The Green Lantern co-writers Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim and Fringe and Vampire Diaries alum Andrew Kreisberg. I hear that David Nutter is interested in directing the project, which takes the comic book character, created by Mort Weisinger and George Papp, and sets him in a new world with an original story that is not based on the comics, published by DC Entertainment. Arrow, produced by Warner Bros. TV and Berlanti’s studio-based Berlanti Television, was developed by Berlanti and Guggenheim who came up with the idea and wrote the storyline and then brought in Kreisberg to write the script. Kreisberg, who has comics experience, having written DC Comics’ Green Arrow and Black Canary among other books, previously worked with Berlanti and Guggenheim on their ABC drama Eli Stone.

First introduced in an 1941 edition of More Fun Comics, Green Arrow is a superhero dressed like Robin Hood who is an archer using trick arrows, including glue, net, tear gas and even kryptonite arrows. His secret identity is billionaire Oliver Queen. This marks the character’s return to the CW where it was a fixture on the Superman-inspired Smallville for several years. Portrayed by Justin Hartley, who is not attached to Arrow, Oliver Queen/Green Arrow was introduced in a 7-episode arc on the show in 2006, with Hartley joining the series as a regular in 2008. Also serving as a bridge between the two shows would be Nutter, who directed the pilot for Smallville.

Developing a series based on a DC property to succeed the recently departed Smallville was a priority for the CW this development season. “We’re looking next year to do a superhero show if the right superhero comes to be,” CW president Mark Pedowitz said at the summer TCA. In addition to Arrow, the network has in contention an adaptation of Deadman penned by Supernatural creator Eric Kripke. This is the CW’s second pilot order this season, following the pickup of mystery drama Cult last week.

Arrow would mark the second pilot order for Berlanti and Guggenheim so far this season. Earlier this week, Fox greenlighted Guilty, a legal drama penned by Guggenheim and executive produced by him and Berlanti. Berlanti, Guggenheim, Nutter and Kreisberg, who serves as co-executive producer on Syfy’s Warehouse 13, are with WME.

In other words the CW doesn't really care about the character at all, but wants to throw something up against the wall and cram the property into their hip teen mold. I've not been that impressed with most of Berlanti's shows.

I'm hoping for the best since Wonder Woman crashed and burned, especially since if this fails we probably won't get a comic book show for quite some time.

Kinda how I feel about this too. I'm actually not understanding at all why they just didn't make this a spin-off from Smallville. Seems like a waste really. I love Green Arrow, but this is giving me some bad vibes so far. Guess we just have to wait and see what happens...

I don't understand why CW doesn't just take what they started in Smallville season 6 and just do a JUSTICE LEAGUE show.

CW needs to learn that sometimes a spin off can work. CSI, DS9, NCIS, etc. etc.

Agreed. This is a missed opportunity.

If "The Avengers" movie does well, they might do that.

The answer to that is simple Superman & Batman, you really can't have the Justice League without them and Warner Bros. will not allow any network to portray those characters on TV. It's the reason we never saw Batman on Smallville and why they only allowed them to only show the Superman costume at the very end of the series.

They have feel that it will hurt or thin the impact of their movie profits especially if the TV show fails. I don't blame them as I can just imagine the nerd rage from a Batman or Justice League series with the same budget as Smallville.

Did it even make it onto the air? I remember hearing/seeing stuff about the new series, and then, nada.

My guess is that Smallville producers would get a licensing fee for doing nothing if the CW did an official Green Arrow spin-off from Smallville. CW does not want to pay them money when they can just license the character from DC, cutting the Smallville producers out of the loop.

Parts of the unfinished pilot have been bootlegged on the Internet. It never made it to air and the show was canceled.

I would like to see something along the lines of the Comic "the longbow hunter" which was a more serious take on Green Arrow years ago... No trick arrows, and some dark storylines.

i dont see any low or middle level character making it. Maybe a low level team like they tried to do with Birds of Prey. Green Arrow, Black Canary and a few other lesser DC characters might be fun. I really cant see Green Arrow carrying a show.

Stephen Amell Cast in The CW’s ARROW

After learning that The CW was replacing its superhero void left by the end of Smallville with Arrow, based on the DC Comics hero Green Arrow, we were left to wonder who would play the superhero. Well, wonder no more as THR has learned that Stephen Amell has been cast as the titular character. The series follows Amell as a playboy by day who becomes the Green Arrow at night who fights crime in the city with a special bow and arrow. Currently the series is ordered to pilot with Green Lantern duo Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim executive producing and writing the project, so hopefully it will actually make it to air. With Hung canceled, Amell’s schedule was left free and clear for what promises to be quite the opportunity, the same kind that turned Tom Welling into a star after playing Clark Kent on Smallville.

Doesn't really look like Oliver to me. Not sure how I'm feeling about this show so far. Still think it should have been a Smallville spin-off instead.

I don't see it in him at all... I gotta say that I think Justin Hartley was perfect as Queen.

If it's not Hartley, then there was only one other obvious choice for me: Josh Holloway.
