Default Miramax titles find distribution (FINALLY!)

Perhaps they can now get to work on Pulp Fiction, Trainspotting, The Crow, Shakespeare in Love.... all the titles we've been waiting for!!

From The Digital Bits:
Quote:
"it's now official: Miramax (as owned by Filmyard Holdings) has partnered with The Weinstein Company for new content creation and also distribution of its catalog of more than 700 films on Blu-ray, DVD and digital download. Hopefully that means a whole range of eagerly-awaited and long-neglected films will finally see the light of day on Blu-ray. From the piece at Home Media: "Part of the agreement has Miramax and Weinstein creating new material for Blu-ray releases of Miramax films, including roundtables featuring cast and directors." Well, it's about damn time! Here's a suggestion, guys: How's about starting with Pulp Fiction, The English Patient, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Trainspotting and The Crow? As part of the deal, the two companies are also planning on working together to produce sequels to many of the key titles in the Miramax catalog. No doubt we'll hear more in the coming weeks."
...can't say I'm happy about the "sequel" talk (they mention Clerks, Swingers, Copland, and Shall We Dance, among others), but at least we'll finally get our Blu's!

I think many of those fall under the agreement. The article does mention the Scream franchise.

Nice to hear. Smaller studios that deserve distribution...

I'm a little mixed on this news.

On the positive side of things, who better to give the Miramax library the respect it deserves than the people that founded it?

On the negative, the Weinsteins tended to amass movies, hold them hostage and even supress superior versions of their films (they cut down Cinema Paradiso then did the same thing to Malena).

Also, I hope this doesn't stop Criterion from getting in on their film library.

Hopefully the director's cut of Jersey Girl is in there somewhere. This also brings in some hope for a matching set of all the Scream movies, not just the first three.

Does this also include the pre-Disney Miramax titles that used to be distributed by LIVE/Artisan/Lionsgate? I notice many of those have yet to be put on BD

I think they still have the rights to Dragons Forever... considering the fact they showed it in its original Hong Kong cut on Spike TV several years ago AND subtitled, I wouldn't mind them working on a blu-ray!
