Wonder what the extras will be this time.
I might wait for the Criterion edition. Didn't they announce or hint at it?

Icon also released it in Australia so it's probably exactly the same disc and has the following special features:
* You owe me one - short film
* No one under 17 and under admitted - short film
* Deleted scenes
* Making of - Y Tu Mama Tambien
* Cast and crew bios

It's region free, by the way.

I also planned waiting for the Criterion release but this is so cheap...

Hello,

Confirmation

The UK release of Y tu mam tambien is Region-Free. Therefore, you will be able to play it on your PS3 or SA regardless of your geographical location. For the record, there is no problematic PAL or 1080/50i content preceding the disc's main menu.

Y tu mama tambien Blu-ray

Our review will be up shortly.

I keep hearing about the various types of release (Criterion, Sapphire etc.) but don't know what defines each of these kind of releases. Could someone explain?

Criterion release the Criterion Collection on DVD and now on BD. They're known for putting a lot of effort into releasing/restoring classics and cult films, usually packed with supplemental features. In the early 90s they were the first people to put audio commentaries on films, mainly for laserdisc releases, and also the first ones to letterbox widescreen films as opposed to pan and scan them. (I'm not an expert, I seem to remember gleaning this from wikipedia a while ago - check it out for more info). However, all their BDs are region A locked, and pretty pricey. I have a multi region player, only have Third Man, Howards End and Red Shoes by them so far. Most people I guess would prefer a Criterion version of, say, Y tu mama tambien because it'll probably be a more impressive package than the recently released UK version. But, as I say, they only release in North America and get rights to distribute films there, so if something has been released by them in North America they may still be released by another studio elsewhere in the world (eg, M, Black Narcissus, Red Shoes and soon the Third Man have all been released by Criterion in the US, but other studios here)

The Sapphire series are a series of films released by Paramount which are just sort of, the banner they give to their high profile releases of famous titles. Examples include Braveheart and Forrest Gump... Gladiator also, though that's getting a remaster because it wasn't as impressive a transfer as the others in the series. The forthcoming American Beauty is one as well. In the UK they don't have the 'sapphire' banner on the cases, but they're essentially the same releases and transfers.

Does anyone know which version this is? The R and NC-17 versions are quite different. The US R version deletes a key scene, without which the rest of the movie makes little sense.
[Show spoiler] the scene is the one where the two young men kiss while the woman pleasures them both

I held off preordering because of the worry about the regioning and wondered how much the film would really benefit being on blu-ray. I imagine criterion will probably do a better job for their future release, though considering the cost of criterion releases, looks like I'll get the unrated dvd locally.

Just got this bluray today- running time on back of cover says 102 mins but it runs to 105 mins.
As far as I know the original rated US dvd was 100 mins and un-rated US NC-17 dvd is 105 mins so I am a little confused. The scene you talk about in (spoiler) is in the UK bluray- just checked it.
Just fyi, there is no option in the discs set up options to turn English subtitles on or off...the disc plays back automatically with English subtitles turned on but you can in fact turn them off if you wish if your bluray players remote has a subtitle button (most do). So they are not burnt in subtitles.

That is a key scene for understanding the ending!!!
BTW
I have the australian blu-ray (i think is the same transfer) and definitely is the uncut version, don't worry about that.

Yeah I'm pretty sure that scene was never censored in the UK at all, either in the cinema or on home video - (thank god - best scene in the film!) - it always got an 18 certificate and you can get away with a lot more than 'that' in an 18 film!

I don't understand why the actual movie itself is watchable Region 0/Free, but the rest of it is not. Very stupid. If you're gonna put out a movie and label it "region free" then the entire disc should be viewable! Definitely will be selling this B.S. copy the second an American version comes out.
It's the 50hz special features that are the problem. Sony's don't like them! Some players are okay with them though, PS3's don't like 'em either.
