One of the most embarrassing theatrical runs in 2011. Debuted at #9 with $3 million and 3 huge stars. Disappeared quickly.

I heard it was pretty good. To each their own I guess.

Cool

I couldn't see myself picking this up even if The Release schedule for 1/31/12 wasn't full. A bargain bin blind buy at best, in my opinion.

Honestly, I am. For me, this was one of the most surprising movies of last year. Was it Oscar-worthy? God no! But it was charming and sweet in a way that very few movies can accomplish without becoming sappy. Day one purchase for me

Gonna pick this up today if I can find a copy with the slipcover. It was a fun low key indie comedy. Not a hut busting laugh out loud type comedy, but 3 great performances by the leads plus an amazing cast besides them makes it worth a watch.

I think the bird watching aspect is what killed it from the start. Not only does the general public not really care about it as a plot device, but the studio had no idea how to market it...

Well, this was based on a book...about bird watching. But I agree that the studio realized too late that star power alone couldn't save it.

Sucks to be the person who pre-ordered this from Amazon and have the price drop $10 on the day after release. Amazon usually doesn't offer refunds on that since it falls outside the Pre-Order Price Guarantee since the Release Day is over. Really bad timing on the Price Drop there.

Not sure what that has to do with it being a movie plot that doesn't work for mass audiences, but thanks for the info. I actually didn't know that.

It's $19.99 as of today, was it a one day $9.99 sale? I would have grabbed it if so, but I had no idea. Also, if you call up Amazon and tell them you're a good customer, you like them a lot, you wanna keep doing business with them, etc, they might work with you. I got a movie the day after it's 'amazon prime guaranteed delivery day', and they gave me back ALL of my money, literally 100% of it. So like I said, it's worth a shot...

Yeah, I just wanted to point out the real question, which was: why did anybody think that a book about bird watching would make a good movie? Especially with a budget of $41 million?

Agreed! Great cast, and I actually liked the low key/indie comedy feel to it. But like you said, why spend 41mil on it? This could have been a sleeper hit had the budget been closer to 5-10 mil, but at over 40mil with a plot about bird watching, you're just setting yourself up to lose money.

But again i'm a fan of the movie, so I can't speak too harshly of it. But yes, I agree!

No, it was 29.99 through release day and then dropped to 19.99 the day after. I've had that happen to me before and Amazon didn't refund the difference.

Watched this tonight and I liked it. While bird watching, birding, or whatever you want to call it is the primary plot device of this film to me it was more about relationships, goals, life, etc.

With that said I manage a little over 35,000 acres of state land and birding is a very popular activity. At certain times of the year we get all kinds of people calling and coming out to the forest to hunt done birds to check off their lists. Now as others have mentioned parlaying that into a film. . .
