I don't own a computer basically it turns the PS3 into a functional computer, it's pretty basic manage music, videos and I can rip dvd's to my hdd I still haven't figured out how to write anything to my usb dvd/cd writer but it does read dvd/cd's just fine. I mostly use it for the internet, it lets me use firefox. I paid $100 when I got it and for me it's been good enough that I haven't missed having a pc in the house, setup can be easy, or difficult this will depend upon your tv. Mine is a 38 in. wide screen 1920×1080 i crt this required more hands on setup. all the help I needed was on the internet. This software is free a I won't spend my money on some Microsoft glitchy o.s. My PS3 has a western digital 500 gb esata hdd hooked up to where the old 60 gb hdd was. This install means that your PS3 will have two operating systems on it, don't let that trouble you it's very easy to move from one to the other with the press of the X button to go to ydl and a click of the mouse to get back to the PS3 os. T-Town Oil hope this helps you too. I was faced with the choice of getting a computer or a PS3 the computer wouldn't do blu-ray and I wanted a bigger monitor this was a no brainer. Good luck to you.

How is the emulator support (for playing Atari, NES and SNES games)? Last I checked it was there (sort of) but not really that good yet. Once it's good then it's a no brainer to install it - we'll have the Wii Virtual Console all for free and all games originally intact as they were (things like Tecmo Bowl will still have the real rosters instead of stripped away like the Wii version).

Sorry I can't help you there I haven't even heard about this I'll be looking into though, sounds pretty cool for some software that's free to download off the internet.

Did you run a cable to the inside of the PS3 and leave the side open or did you get the PS3 extender kit that slips into the existing drive tray?

I just modified the cable and plug it into the connector inside the PS3 then I cut a slot in the hdd cover for the cable to pass through, I don't like the way this looks and will post pictures after I upgrade my hdd and cable in a few weeks. This upgrade will include 1 new hdd cover, 2 external SATA / eSATA Adapter cables, 1 two bay external hdd case with built-in raid controller, and 2 750gb 3.5 SATA hdd's. sorry I didn't post a reply sooner but it's labor day and this worker had to labor.

No hurry. Thanks for the update...appreciate it. Pictures would be cool when you have all that done.

i have tinkered with Linux for a while. Actualy i was using SUSE 10.1 in place of windows for a good yuear, that is untill I started my MCP/MCSE certification classes, I had to wipe my linux box to install 2003 server to practice my labs at home but at same time .

In order to burn disks in linux, you need a burning app just like windows.

K3B is a great burning app, to me it rivals NERO on PC. But it's 100% free!

If yelow dog can install RPM packages, you can go to rpm.pbone.net (can't remember if it had a www before it or not, search it in google.) search yellow dog linux, K3B for PPC platform.

SUSE 10.1 alowed me to simply double click the RPM like an EXE on windows and install it autiomatically. Though even if you don't have a RPM package manager, you can use shell (linux's command prompt) to install it manually. Just search web for "Installing RPMs".

OK, I see people here with YDL, and with Ubuntu...

I loaded both YDL (without the subscription) and Fedora about 6 months ago... and at the time, neither had a decent set of video drivers for the PS3.

Todd - are you running the subscription version or not, if not what kind of resolution do you get with your build?

Beta-guy - I run Feisty on the PC, but I after crappy results with YDL-free and Fedora, I figured I would wait till the drivers 'matured" which build are you running and what kind of resolutions do you get?

TIA
Scott

AMD64 will not work, the Cell processor requires the "power PC" compiled version... THAT is why the YDL says it is for the PS3, because it is PPC compiled

Edit:
32 bit won't work either, it MUST be a PPC build

To be honest I'm running ydl 5.0 with subscription, the installation had to be done in text mode, I then had to edit several command lines to get 1080i output, the PQ is sharp, clear, and worth the effort. I'm not the most computer savvy person, I enlisted the help of my best friend who hadn't ever worked with LINUX, or any other os than windows. My system display is an RCA 38in" wide screen crt. I've got Enlightenment E17 desktop running but I did the full installation.

I am installing it to my UK PS3 right now. I wonder if 10GB is enough.
My Japanese PS3 installation failed (I only used standard TV). I plan to erase linux partition from my Japanese machine. So, Japanese machine will be mainly for games, UK PS3 for linux and movies

I switched from YDL to Ubuntu. I like Ubuntu much more. But, still I rarely use linux because my Mac is only a few feet away from my PS3, and more useful that linux honestly.
