Paul the Apostle of Christ is up for pre-order on Blu-ray at Amazon. I did not get a chance to see this in the theater.

This movie with Jim Caviezel comes out tomorrow. I think Sony is releasing the movie, so there is a chance that Best Buy carries it.

A family member that I know subscribes to the unlimited Blu-ray rental program using Netflix. For some reason they received this movie on Blu-ray around Tuesday of last week, which is around 1 week before the official release date. I have this Paul Apostle of Christ on pre-order from Amazon and the official release date is not until Tuesday 6-19-2018. So I had a chance to see this movie on Blu-ray one week before release date and missed my opportunity. I would rather watch the Blu-ray that I own instead of watching a rental. This happen to another Christian movie called Left Behind with Nicolas Cage. RED BOX had it on Blu-ray around 2-4 weeks before the official release date.

The norm is the rental of a movie comes out the same day or 30 days after release date and not a week or two early. Less people well purchase the Blu-ray if the rental is available before the official release date.

Paul, Apostle of Christ Blu-ray user review

Paul, Apostle of Christ on Blu-ray is a Christian movie that is based on the history located in the Gospel of Luke and the book of Acts (This true story also contains a little bit of artistic license mixed in with history). Acts is the fifth New Testament book that is sometimes called Acts of the Apostles. This low budget Christian movie was successful at the box office. It had a budget of only 5 million dollars and box office sales were 22.5 million dollars.

This PG-13 movie is really about the persecution of the early church. Many of the first Christians were tortured and murdered for the cause of Christ by both the Roman Empire and the Sanhedrin. This movie shows Christians like Stephen being stoned to death, Christians being crucified, burned alive, and Paul about ready to get his head chopped off. The early Christians could have denounced (Yeshua) Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior and stop practicing the Christian faith in order to save their physical body from harm, however since they lived in the century where many people saw Jesus perform miracles including raising people from the dead (According to the historical record Jesus himself was raised from the dead and over 500 eyewitnesses saw him before he ascended into heaven). Therefore, many of the early Christians were willing to die for their faith since they believed Jesus Christ is God in the flesh (To deny Christ means one also loses their salvation). For several centuries over the last 2000 years many Christians around the world have been tortured and murdered for their faith because of bad government policies. In some areas of the world in the 21st Century where radical Islam exists under sharia law, Christians today are still being tortured and murdered for their faith.

This movie is about a man called Saul who ended up hunting and killing many Christians since he thought Christianity was just another false religion. However, a supernatural light and a voice from Jesus in heaven ends up blinding Saul on the way to Damascus and he loses his eyesight. Then around 3 days later the Lord used Ananias to supernatural heal Saul’s eyesight. After Saul repented and received his eyesight back he started preaching the Gospel in Synagogues and to the Gentiles. Soon after Saul became a Christian, he decided to start using his other name called Paul (Dual names were common in those days). It really is an incredible story to see Saul (later called Paul) go from being one of the most feared enemies of the Christian faith, to becoming one of the most loved Apostles among the early Christians. It shows how the power of Jesus Christ can transform someone’s life. While this movie is ideal for Christians that are familiar with the New Testament scriptures, this movie might be hard for some non-Christians to understand since one really needs to pay attention since the movie jumps around and the story of Paul is not in chronological order.

Video quality

Sony’s Affirm film did release Risen on the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format back on May 24th 2016, however it is a disappointment that Paul, Apostle of Christ did not get the same high quality 4K treatment. In Sony’s defense, Risen received a 4 times higher budget at 20 million dollars. Therefore, the best way to watch Paul, Apostle of Christ is on the standard 1080P Blu-ray format. This movie was released on a Blu-ray and DVD combo pack. The dual layer 480i DVD uses a total of 6.12GB of space out of 8.5GB. For those families that own 100% Blu-ray players, there is no reason to watch the lower quality 480i DVD disc since the 1080P Blu-ray disc contains the exact same movie and the exact same movie trailers and extra features. The only purpose of the DVD disc is for those families that do not own a Blu-ray player in every room.

Paul, Apostle of Christ uses a total of 34.2GB of space out of 50GB on the dual layer Blu-ray disc. For some scenes, the average MPEG-4/AVC codec bit rate was around 24Mbps, however some other scenes in the movie were around 25-27Mbps range. This 1080P dual layer Blu-ray disc had plenty of unused space, and it would have been ideal if higher bit rates in the 35Mbps range would have been used to increase the video quality. This movie has good color quality with decent resolution. However, the lower light condition in the dungeon and other areas of the movie is most likely there to increase the mood and feel of what it is like to be imprisoned and persecuted. This movie is encoded with several different language subtitles.

Audio quality

Paul, Apostle of Christ has a total of 3 lossless audio soundtracks. The English, French, and Spanish (Castilian) all have a 5.1 DTS-HD Master audio soundtrack that is bit for bit exactly the same as the 3 studio masters. There is also several lossy soundtracks at 640kbps, like the Spanish (Latin American) 5.1 Dolby Digital, Italian 5.1 Dolby Digital, Thai 5.1 Dolby Digital, English Audio Descriptive Service 5.1 Dolby Digital, and French Audio Descriptive Services 5.1 Dolby Digital. Overall the English lossless soundtrack had good dialogue with the subwoofer and surround channels kicking in once and awhile.

Special Features

The main menu and all the special features are encoded with the MPEG-4/AVC codec at 1080P quality. The main menu also has a 5.1 LPCM soundtrack. Most of the Christian movie trailers are in 5.1 Dolby Digital (640kbps), however the rest of the special features use 100% 2.0 Dolby Digital (192kbps). Some studios release their movie trailers and special features with lossless audio, but Sony still uses lossy audio for the special features (hopefully that well change in the future). The Deleted Scenes is 3 minutes and 36 seconds long. The Living Scriptures is 3 minutes and 52 seconds long. The Path of the Apostle: Adapting Paul lasts 11 minutes and 6 seconds. Recreating First Century Rome lasts 3 minutes and 55 seconds. An Extraordinary Friendship: Luke & Paul lasts 2 minutes and 17 seconds. There are several Christian movie trailer Previews from Sony Affirm films on this Blu-ray disc. No audio commentary track was created for this movie, which is a disappointment for those that like commentary tracks.

Conclusion

Paul, Apostle of Christ was an interesting true story to watch on Blu-ray. The 1080P picture quality and 5.1 lossless soundtrack sounded good. The special features were also enjoyable to watch. This movie is recommend for all Christians that want to learn more about the history of Paul and how he became a follower of Christ. However, some non-Christians that are not familiar with the New Testament might get a little lost since this movie is not in chronological order and jumps around on the timeline.

I just finished seeing this, and while I enjoyed it please let me stress this is NOT for children alone. Mention is made of Christians being burned as torches under Nero's reign in Rome, and a few (brief and non-explicit) scenes show this happening. There's also mention of Christians being thrown to wild animals for sport, and one (again, non-explicit) scene near the end involves this. Other moments in the film involve pagan idol worship, which might be more intense than expected for some viewers. If you liked movies such as Risen or Passion of the Christ, you'll probably enjoy this one. I would recommend it to anyone, young or old, with the above first exception. If a child wishes to see this, please make sure their parent or guardian is with them.

I enjoyed Risen, but I am disappointed that this did not get 4K treatment

I would have thought that most every NEW movie would get a 4K release but apparently that is not the case here (or for Christopher Robin). I wanted to see this in theaters but we never got around to it (as we don't go much). I'll have to get this and Christopher Robin on Blu-ray for the family as part of our Christmas gifts.

Hope the BD looks near-4K when upscaled on 4K Oled TV

Saw this a couple of days ago. Great movie, solid performances and nice soundtrack. There's a certain element of predictability on some secondary characters and story threads, but for the most part they don't affect the overall quality of the movie.

The transfer was solid as well.

I specifically said that I was referring to the secondary characters.
