New Lines Moves Forward with JOURNEY 3 for Targeted 2014 Release

It looks as though New Line has a bona fide franchise on their hands with the Journey to the Center of the Earth movies. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island just passed $270 million worldwide, besting the Brendan Fraser-fronted first movie’s $242 million total gross, and now Heat Vision reports that New Line is moving forward with Journey 3. The studio has closed deals with Journey 2 director Brad Peyton and writers Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn to return for the third (and likely not final) installment. Peyton commented that they’re going to “grow the mythology,” and said that while Journey 2 was definitely a franchise reboot, Journey 3 will be about “making the seminal work in the franchise.” Alrighty then. The film is on a fast track with a targeted 2014 release in mind.

No deals have been discussed with returning cast members, but I wouldn’t be shocked if Josh Hutcherson opts to stick with The Hunger Games instead of the Journey series. Apparently kids really like the 3D franchise, and I’m totally fine with them continuing the series as long as they feature burly action stars or legendary thespians gleefully riding giant CGI creatures in each and every installment.

I liked both of the Journey movies to date, especially since they are adventure movies that the whole family can enjoy and see together. I will definitely see the third installment, but was wondering who will be returning. If Josh Hutcherson does not return, then how can Dwayne Johnson reprise his role when he was Josh's stepfather? On the surface, Brendon Frasier and Dwayne Johnson were the stars of each movie, but it was Josh's character that ties both movies together because of his family history.

Just get a better script. The second, IMO, was like the first. What I mean by that is, once they got to the center of the earth or the mysterius island all they cared about was, how do we get back home? If more is infused into the writing I can see this being a great franchise for New Line.

They definately need to bring back the whole family, that includes finding away to work with BF's schedule.

And hopefully they use the title Journey From the Earth to the Moon.
since it was quite obvious that the movie is setting up From Earth to the Moon as the sequel.

maybe Josh should be missing in the 3rd one and Dwayne and Brendan go on an adventure to find him

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson in Talks For ‘Journey 3′

Since making the movie from the ring to the big screen, Dwayne ‘the Rock’ Johnson has tried to balance teen to adult-skewing action movies with more family-friendly fare. His latest family outing was Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, in which he essentially took the place of Brendan Fraser, who had starred in the 2008 Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D.

Journey 2 was dinged by critics left and right, but it did well enough, especially internationally, to out-perform the first film. (3D ticket surcharges, which weren’t as high in many markets when the first movie was released in 2008, likely helped.) So New Line is already assembling a third film based (kinda) on the writings of Jules Verne.

Earlier this week director Brad Peyton and screenwriters Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn were signed to make the threequel, and now Dwayne Johnson is in talks to join them.

The Wrap says that Johnson would reprise the role of Hank, and says that “according to reports” Josh Hutcherson will also reprise his role from the first two films. Hutcherson is likely signed for three films, so if New Line wants him back, he may not have much choice.

We don’t know any specifics about which Verne story the Gunn writing team will adapt for Peyton, but the director said this earlier this week:

I may be the only one but I don't care if "J-Hutch" is in the 3rd one or not but if Vanessa Hudgens is in the third one, I'm definitely seeing it.

Yeah but i hope The Rock is in it. With the hunger games, i wont be surprised if Josh doesnt return

The only way I Josh coming back is if he's contracted to do so. With The Hunger Games destined to be a huge hit, I'd be surprised if he really wanted to return. But he won't have much of a choice if he was contracted for three movies.

Part of me hopes they can somehow get Brendan Fraser to come back as well. I think that could be really cool.
