Default HDTV Advice

Hey guys, I'm looking to purchase a new HDTV and I've narrowed down my decision to a LED-LCD and a Plasma and I need advice on which is better... I'm debating between the Samsung UND8000 (LED-LCD) or the Samsung PND8000 (Plasma) series and most likely I'll be getting a 55" in either series so please help me pick out which is better and give the reasons why...

I know that w/the UND8000 series the most common problem I keep hearing about is the uneven screen uniformity which is somewhat a distraction for me because I own also the UND6500 series and it's quite noticeable w/this but other than that the D8000 series gets good marks for its black levels and awesome picture quality

With the PND8000, you get even screen uniformity since it's a plasma, off angle viewing is more superior, however, I worry about the "burn in" issues common w/plasmas along with reliability issues w/it being a plasma

So, it would be greatly appreciated if you could help me pick out which of these two series is the better choice. Thanks.

Plasma's are generally considered to be more preferable to LCD if your going to be watching a lot of movies. You said that you were worried about burn in issues, from what I hear and don't take this as gospel, is that "burn in" was an issue with older plasma's and as long as you break the plasma in properly you should not have a problem.

I do have as Samsung LED LCD and really like it and it was only the first or second generation I used to notice that the screen jumped. Either it just needed a little break in time or I don't notice it any more, which is highly unlikely.

Edge lit models should be at the bottom of your list. You're paying for "LED" on the box, when a better performing CCFL LCD can always be had at those ranges.

Burn in is NOT a common issue with Plasma's. Can it happen? Of course, but it's rare unless you just abuse your TV.

Reliability issues I have had my one plasma for close to 8 years now and it's awesome. I know own 4 Plasmas all without issue.

Plasmas and LED/LCD's all have around a 3% failure rate so you are pretty safe either way you go.

My vote would be for the Samsung Plasma..

Vlad I'm in the same boat myself. I've looked at both of those of those tv's. Obviously both have phenomenal picture quality. I've seen both tv's around the same price point so i don't think one has better value. About 80 percent of reviews from online critics prefer plasma technology for picture quality and consistant motion. It's possible to burn in any tv if an image is left on for LONG periods of time but plasmas don't really have that issue like before. I think if you really love the more vibrant look than maybe the LED is the way to go. If you want more consistant motion, go with the plasma. Another fear of mine is getting the LED and not being able to get rid of the SOAP OPERA look many LCD's have.

I love the bezel and stand on the Samsungs.I might decide to go with a 65'' Panasonic V series as it has great reviews. I would like to hold on to a tv for several years this time. I want to go much bigger than I originally planned so I'm not regretting it or worried about keeping up with the joneses as I think the trending theme is bigger is better.

That is caused by the motion interpolation feature on the display which can - and should - be turned off.

Plasma delivers a better picture, but uses more power, and runs noticeably hotter; the TVs themselves tend to be thicker and more dated looking. LED is brighter and less natural looking but also consumes less power and the set is usually thinner. Can't have everything...
