Default What does Audssey actually do?

I’ve been reading a lot on it lately and I think what it does is balance your speakers using a mic as a SPL meter? Could this same thing be achieved with a SPL meter and some pink or white noise and adjust the dB level of each speaker from a certain spot? Is this pretty much the gist of it? I’m also not sure how frequencies come in to play, because from reading, I should set all my speakers to 80Hz for the low limit and 80Hz for the sub on the high limit.

Audyssey does WAY more then just level match your speakers/sub, which you can indeed do with an SPL meter and pink noise. Below are a few link to check it out.

Okay, I guess I'll open the can of worms. What's the problem with MCACC that is so much better with Audyssey? I ask because my newest AVR is an Elite, which uses MCACC. Prior, I had an Onkyo with Audyssey. To be honest, I'm not sure I can tell any sort of difference...

Yes and yes, I have everything I can delivered here. We pretty much have a daily delivery so it makes it much easier.

There isn't a problem with MCACC but to my ears even the basic MultiEQ in the Marantz 6005 I had made movies sound better than the MCACC in my Elite SC-25, which I still have and is being used in my living room. Not saying the Elite sounds bad but I feel Audyssey makes movies sound better to me. I also believe both sound WAY better than Yamaha's YPAO, especially when dealing with any multi-channel material.

In the end it's all personal preference anyway. The main reason for the switch for me was to get SubEQ so I can have my 2 subs calibrated separately.

Which Onkyo did you replace?

Bill

I'm not sure, but is there more then one MCACC? I do know there are a few levels of Audyessy. The AVR he is getting has the newest in it, Audyessy XT32.

Here is a 2007 quote from Andre Smith of AVS which gave me more of an understanding what Audyssey can do...

...I first heard Audyssey demo'ed at the CEDIA convention last fall in Denver. Mike Thuresson, Audyssey Installer Program Manager, demo'ed a clip from the movie "Open Range". The demo was held in a tiny hotel room, maybe 18'X 20'. Mike played chapter 7 - a huge rainstorm with thunder. With Auyssey out, the front imaging was very good. I heard distinct sounds from the front left, center and front right speakers but very little from the surround channels. The thunder claps also sounded good from the sub. But when Mike switched Audyssey in (via the front panel bypass control), the audio suddenly surrounded me and I could hear distinct rain drops coming from all 5 speakers. The low frequency thunder claps shook me down to my feet. Mike referred to this as Audyssey creating an "Audio Bubble" around the listening area. What really amazed me was after I received and calibrated Audyssey in my home system, I tried the exact same movie clip and experienced the same "audio bubble" I heard during Mike's demo. The point is - this thing really works and works well!

Not to mention that MCACC doesn't do much of anything for your subs...so XT32 or bust for me as well......now if I could just save some money, the 4311 would be in my hands soon too. Congrats Bill......don't forget the pics and tells us your impressions.....oh yeah, and enjoy it too!

What do you have on order? I hate to replace my AVR, as I just got it last summer, but it just seems that something is "missing" with my sound. I'm giving serious consideration to having ChadB come out to calibrate my plasma, and if/when I do I may pay to have him do an audio calibration also. I've read good things about what he can do with audio.

You will love the 4311. I actually down graded from the 5308 to the 4311 when I discovered Denon was going to charge $1100 to upgrade the 5308 to match the 4311. So, I sold the 5308, purchased the 4311, banked the remaining $$$ and have not looked back.

The Audyseey in the 4311 is fantastic. Because of the 4311, I have now installed Wides and added a second sub which Audyseey calibrates magnificently.

You are killing me.....I have wanted XT32 for well over a year now.....just too many things have either needed to be replaced or fixed in the house/car that I can't seem to keep the money once I have it saved for a new AVR.

You can turn the EQ on or off for your 2 channel stuff as well. Some people don't like the way that Audyssey handles strictly 2ch stuff, some enjoy the Audyssey "Flat" setting for 2ch, that is how I ended up trading my Yamaha for the Marantz 6005.

Again, it's all personal preference.
