Here's the history of projectors I've owned, price paid, specs:
2002 - 2005 Epson TW-100 $3,600 700 Lumens, 800:1 CR 2005 - 2008 No Projector (Panasonic 50" Plasma $3,600) 2008 - 2009 Epson 1080UB $2,800 1600 Lumens, 50,000:1 CR 2009 - 2011 Panasonic AX200 $1,200 2000 Lumens, 6,000:1 CR 2011 - Mar 2012 Epson 8350 $1,100 2000 Lumens, 50,000:1 CR Mar 2012 - Present Panasonic AR100 $1,000 2800 Lumens, 50,000:1 CR I was happy with the Epson 8350 but wanted more brightness (134" screen, light controlled room), I was approaching 1800 hours on the bulb and with a new bulb purchase on the horizon decided to sell the 8350, which I received $700 for, and figured I save $225 from not getting a new bulb which gave me $925 towards a new projector. I bought the AR-100 for $1,000 in March, which in my mind only cost me $75 more than keeping the 8350 and making a new bulb purchase for it (and the AR100 gave me more brightness, the only deficiency of the 8350). Every time I consider something like an Epson 5010, Panasonic AE7000, or they're upcoming replacements in the fall, I think above the $2,500 price point I'd have to keep those 2 to 3 years for the economics to make sense. Besides my general inclination to make upgrades to my HT, I think upgrading my projector annually for the newest model in the $1,000 to $1,200 price range is a better alternative. An annual upgrade cycle should avoid any bulb replacements and re-sell value on the existing projector should be decent (it would only be 1 yr old) and that should work out so the net cash outlay is only $100 to $200 per year. I assume the 5010 / AE7000 performance level will be in the ~ $1,200 projectors within a couple of years. So it's really not that long of a wait. By the way, I have no interest in 3D, I like the 5010 / AE7000 because of their better specs in 2D performance and other bells & whistles. Anyone else considering upgrading projectors annually? |
