Default Freeflow combat system

I love this gameplay style in the Arkham series and I noticed other games are starting to use it (Captain America had it, seems like the new Spiderman movie game will as well).

Did this start with Arkham Asylum or did other games have it earlier? are other games just copying it? Are they paying to use it?

Other games have combo systems (see: Devil May Cry, God of War), so the concept isn't unique to the Arkham series. However, Rocksteady's implementation in Arkham Asylum and Arkham City is really, really good.

I don't think they've bothered patenting it, so it's probably just imitation (which is the sincerest form of flattery). Realistically both Capt. America and Spiderman have a similar sort of fighting prowess as Batman, so it's not too much of a surprise if the new games imitate this system.

Ya but those aren't nearly the same thing ... sure you can rack up hits and get point multipliers ... games have had various combo systems, but the actual freeFLOW is completely orginal.

Yeah I'm pretty sure the free flow thing itself is original to the new Batman games. It's really spectacular.

From what I've seen the Freeflow Combat system is amazing, but only in the Arkham games. All the knock-offs just fall flat because they try to add their own spin to it and end up ruining it.

I feel the same way about Devil May Cry's combat system, which I still consider the gold standard.

I played the demo of the first Batman game. What is different about the combat from other games like Devil May Cry, God of War? I probably didn't get deep enough into the demo to figure it out. The demo is fun and I'm not knocking it but not sure what is unique about it.

Unlike Devil May Cry, whose combo system is about chaining and variation, the Freeflow combat system is more about rhythm--you do more damage by timing your strikes and other moves with fluidity than by just mashing out attacks (although technically, you shouldn't mash for Devil May Cry, either).

God of War's combat is more about chains and being able to cancel almost any move into a dodge or parry.

Oh okay, thanks for the explanation. I hope to try the second Batman soon.

Yeah, button mashing will fail entirely in the Batman games because it will wreck your combo whereas you can largely get away with it in many other games.

In the Batman games, fighting is best described as a fluid orchestra of song and dance ending in the violation and death of all you describe as foe. It's hard to explain, much easier to experience yourself.

Right. It is not murder if it is self defense.
