I bought Bridesmaids on Blu-Ray in September 2011 and it included the unrated version, I found the original rated theatrical version to be far more superior. I didn't like most of the additional scenes and I was disappointed for some of the cut scenes.
Are there any movies that you prefer one version than the other? My List: 40-Year-Old Virgin - Unrated American Pie - Unrated American Pie 2 - Unrated American Wedding - Unrated Bridesmaids - Rated Halloween (Zombie) - Unrated Hangover - Rated Knocked Up - Unrated Jennifer's Body - Rated Scary Movie 4 - Unrated What's Your Number? - Unrated Last edited by SwaggerJagger; 03-30-2012 at 03:40 AM. |

I've actually never seen the theatrical of Alien. I have only seen the newer directors cut, on the Alien Anthology. From what I understand, there are only about a total of 4 minutes of different footage. What makes the theatrical better?

The pacing is much better and doesn't interfere with the continuity of Aliens. Scott has said numerous times that the theatrical cut is his Director's Cut.

I actually think the theatrical version of LOTR movies is better than the extended version in terms of pacing (Peter Jackson also mentioned the theatrical cut was the director's cut), but I like the extended version a lot more.
![]() Also, I prefer the theatrical version of pretty much all of the over-the-top R-rated comedies to the unrated version. For Casino Royale, the uncut version is the best (yes, it's only 20 some seconds longer) Last edited by Kamelot; 03-30-2012 at 02:46 AM. |

I pretty much prefer the original theatrical cuts. If they were good enough for theatres they should be good enough for Blu ray. IMO deleted scenes were left out for a reason; either they slowed down the film or were not necessary to the story or the pace of the film. Good example: The 40 Year Old Virgin, the theatrical version was quite long for a comedy already and the extended version really made the film way too long.

Dawn of the Dead (1978) - I prefer the theatrical version over the extended cut. While I like the extra footage in the extended version the theatrical is a mini masterpiece.
The Devil's Rejects - Unrated over theatrical. More gore but I hear Rob Zombie prefers this version as well. RZ's Halloween 2 - Director's unrated version is so much better than theatrical. I actually didn't like the theatrical version when I saw it. The Town - Theatrical over extended. The extended versions are just too long. LOTR Trilogy - I prefer the theatrical cuts although I like the extended versions but once again they are just too long. Pacing is better in theatricals. Apocalypse Now - This ones a tie because I love the ambiguous nature of the original theatrical version. However, the longer Redux cut is a better movie. Weird. Stripes - Theatrical version. I have the BD but i wish it included both versions. The extra footage doesn't do the film justice. Once Upon A Time In America - I haven't seen this new 40 minute longer version. I am familiar with the Cannes Screening Version that runs 229 minutes. I would be interested to see the new version because they say it's Sergio Leone's cut but man 40 more minutes might make the movie too tedious to sit through. As it is the first half hour of this movie is tough to get through. Amazing film but another one that could use a few trims. |

Funny you started this thread. I've heard stories that the Director's (or extended..not sure) cut of Tropic Thunder is so different from the theatrical release that the jokes are all completely different.
I won't buy it in Blu because of this. Anybody else?? If I heard wrong, please tell me, because I'd love to have it. |

I usually prefer the theatrical version unless I know the director was forced by the censors or the studio to edit the film to make it watered down.
So two films that come to mind where I know the director's vision was placed out of their hands would be Natural Born Killers and Live Free or Die Hard. Some director's like James Cameron, I tend to go for his director's cut, as they add so much more and have usually been edited down to a shorter running time by the studio. |
