United Kingdom Future Pricing.. Is it already in place ??

I know the Jersey tax thing has crumbled. But the price hike is due in April.

I'm looking to pre-order The Thing. Except everywhere seems to be £17.99. I started to check places I never order from, but seem to have low prices, i.e Sainsburys and Tesco.

Their preorders, not just The Thing. It seems £17.99 - £18.67 (eh?) is normal.

Now none of these are post April, so either this hike has started, as I'm sure The Thing and others would have been £14.99 (if the was a few months ago)

Or, worse, will the prices online from April be say £18.99 - £20.99, as an example.

Anyone in the know, who could confirm or anyone else started noticing pre orders are price increasing already ???

I noticed stuff like Cowboys & Aliens was closer to £20 than £15 when it was released in-stores but no I haven't really seen a big change. I think most on-line retailers will eat the cost or fear losing business. I guess it depends on the title and the studio, Hugo is 14.99 for the 3D pre-order.

We might see a big pre-order push with retailers which might see them upping the price come release day.

Just like before, if you want it cheap(er) then patience is required, just wait 'till it comes down in price. They can ask £25 for a disc...if they don't want to sell that many!

Some of the price increases are insane though. Tintin was £17.99 everywhere but I found it for £14.99 on HMV. If I see something cheap like this I'm preordering it now in case it goes up by release day.

Last few blu-rays I've preordered have been around the £12/£13 mark. I was starting to think prices had gone down!

I would never pay over £15 for a Blu-ray of a single film, even if it has oodles of extra features. I'll always wait for prices to drop to below £15, and if that means waiting a few months then so be it.

The studios are simply being greedy.

In the case of "The Thing", charging £18 for the blu-ray is hardly being greedy; the film was a box office disaster and the studio are doing all they can just to try and break even! Including the publicity budget, Universal probably spent something like $60 million on "The Thing", and it hasn't even made back half of that yet. Ouch.

I would certainly agree that waiting a few months and getting stuff for a tenner is a good tactic, but some people just can't wait, so tapping into that section of the market makes sense; the studio would be idiots not to take their money!

I'm not slating the price of Blu's and fully realise waiting six months results in a huge price drop, 99% of the time.

The point I'm trying to draw attention to is more the fact that releases for some pretty big titles, as recent a November were up for preorder for £14.99 before the tax thing was mentioned.

I preordered Transformers 3, Cowboys+Aliens, Hangover 2, Final Detination 5 SB, Inbetweners all £14.99 and many more. These were all triple play releases.

I'm looking at upcoming releases for films I'd say are the same level Contagion, Immortals, In Time, Fright Night The Thing - They seem at most places £16 -£18 Some are double play or single

I bought Maniac Cop from Arrow £14.99. Arrow now have Who Dares Wins and Wild Geese preorder, for £17.99 and £18.49.

It just seems like prices are increased already. Maybe nearer the time they'll drop? But it just got me thinking

There is only one thing the price hike will do, and that is stop people buying on release day. I only ever buy on release day now if the films I want has a slip!

Paranormal Activity 3 cheapest is £17.99 at Play/amazon!!
HMV want £19.99!

The only movies that were £17.99 at all online were Steelbook exclusives!
I not seen a standard release for £18 let alone £20 in the last few years.

Nothing to do with how well a film has done, Paranormal Activity was a huge sucess $200 million worldwide it made.

I don't think its just the forthcoming tax increase that's causing price rises as prices are rising on many things other than blus. Part of the problem is the falling value of the pound against currencies where goods are produced and rising fuel costs associated with bringing stuff halfway round the world but the main problem is retailers raising prices to compensate for falling sales. This is suicide in a recession and those retailers that pursue this course will enter a downward spiral ending in their own demise

Just bringing this back into play....

As it turns April this weekend, is anyone expecting to see this price increase from the Jersey based sellers ?

Nothing really been mentioned for a few months

After paying £20 for Criterion discs and £55 for my Japanese Ghibli films, I don't see price the same way anymore.

Agree on that, just bought my first Criterion's... six and they don't come cheaply even before shipping. That plus the usual MoC releases has increased the average cost of a BD for me!

Anything outside of that though and I don't liek paying more than £10. I'm seeing quite a few BD's at less than £7 now though - release day is becoming a thing of the past for me.

yeah, I pre-order/ buy on release for a few reasons.
1. The film is one I love and desperately want. 2. Its a limited edition. 3. The price is an absolute steal! And to agree with others, I don't buy a film that's over £15. I'm happy to wait because they drop so quickly these days.

I've noticed that over here prices in HMV for many new releases has fallen, I was expecting Hugo to be the same price as Tintin which is in HMV for 26.99 but it's on the shelf for 19.99. A lot of smaller films are retailing for far less than they used to, The Big Bang was 16.99 when it was released 2-3 weeks back but I picked it up for 12.99 today. Now that said a lot of the more mainstream titles are priced ridiculously, Fright Night 3D is 29.99, The Thing is 21.99 (had it been under 18 I would have seriously considered picking it up but at that price not a chance), Tangled which is well over a year old at this stage is still 44.99 in my local HMV

Depends what the Blu Ray is, that'd work maybe if you're in the UK but if you want to order something from the US,Canda,Japan,HK etc. you'll be forced to pay more then 15
