Seems to bear very little resemblance to the original Sweeney, which admittedly is the trend for remakes of old shows, but as I love the original series this bothers me more. It resembles (and I've only seen the trailer so who knows) a generic rogue cop narrative with a few memorable lines, title and names from the 70s Thames series.

The Sweeney was a snapshot of its particular moment in time.

sorry, ya just cant replace the late John Thaw and Dennis Waterman.
Now if they would release the TV series and 2 studio movies (Sweeney!, and Sweeney 2) on blu, I'd buy those in a heartbeat!

I was surprised how much I was enjoying this film until the last third, when it gets pretty silly and melodramatic.

A lot of people have scoffed at the climax involving a car chase through a caravan park but actually this was the most "Sweeney" thing about it.

Otherwise, it's only very tenuously related to the tv series. The Sweeney was a much more political show and Regan's relationship to his bosses was much more complex than the cliched "you're out of control, Regan" stuff here.

Still - Winstone's always watchable, there's some good action and a couple of sharp turns. Ironically, it would've made a very good pilot for a UK TV show that might very well have picked up just as much of a cult following as THE SWEENEY itself. At least worth a rental, I'd say.
