I call it my living room! This is what it looks like in my house right now:
About a year ago I said to myself "ya know, I want to see what it's like to evaluate subwoofers". Seemed harmless enough at the time, but I should have known better; between my inherent tenacity, and being type A to begin with, this is how it turned out. That's not all of them either; I have three others boxed up waiting for call tags so I can send them back. For those counting that's an even dozen subwoofers, and that doesn't include the ones I've already reviewed and sent back. Well, sort of; three of them in the picture I have reviewed, two of which I now own. I also own a third sub, which is among them as well, but I'm not telling which it is. Yup, it's a tough job, but someone has to do it. ![]() And before anyone asks... no, my living room is not where I store them. I have a spare bedroom that I use as a staging area, but it was too small for me to line up that many subwoofers and get a picture - I just couldn't back up far enough. So how about a little contest? Think you know your subwoofers? Can you guess what they are? See if you can at least get all the manufacturers, or if you're feeling brave go for the model too. Betcha no one gets every one of them... ![]() Front Row (left to right) 1: 2: 3: 4: 5: Back Row (left to right) 1: 2: 3: 4: |

If you had a Krell Evolution 707 3D Surround Processor, you could hook up
eight of those subs, using y-connectors. The 707 has four subwoofer outputs. |

Since it appears as though the guesses have ceased, perhaps it's time I disclose what the 9 subwoofers are. So, here they are...

![]() Three of them I own -- Simply Sound Audio Rumba 12, XTZ W12.16 and EbenLee Audio ELA-4 -- so that should tell you something about those. With the ELA-4 I was directly involved in the design though, so that ones a bit different for me. The RSL SpeedWoofer 10 and Source Loudspeaker HVS 10 are still waiting for me to do their review; they haven't even been hooked up yet. The XS15 I did use for about 0 hours, because I was curious, but you'll have to wait for the review on that one. ![]() Of those that I've actually put through there paces the Rumba 12 sticks out for value perhaps more so then the rest. The driver, cabinet, attention to detail is all surprising for what it costs. Words like "stout" and "indestructible" spring immediately to mind. It wouldn't be my first choice for music though. The XTZ has gorgeous paint work and one very impressive amp. You can tune it myriad ways with port bungs and EQ switches on the amp. Everything about it exudes quality. It handle music and HT with equal aplomb, but it's not the end-all-be-all of either; it's darn good at both, but not excellent at either. The AT 444SB doesn't come across as much, but when you listen to it the story changes. The dynamics are wonderful, with a clarity and precision to the bass that I definitely like. If they had a 15" version I might have already bought one. AAMOF, that's probably what the Conclusion of my review will say. It's not weak, mind you, but I like that extra kick. There's very little to fault it on, quite frankly. |
