This is getting annoying. The movie isn't even out in the US until tomorrow.

At least the preorder is being posted the same week. Target had a preorder page for Rio 2 a month before the theatrical release date, lol.

We know it's coming anyways I doubt the average joe doesn't even know about half of these pre-orders that pop up on Amazon this early. Just the majority of people that browse this site and other home media forums.

Why does it matter so much? No one is forcing you to pre-order it before you see it.

Saw it last night at a screening.

It's an existential action film!

ScarJo IS the movie.

I enjoyed it and will buy it but I think it's in borderline rental territory. Big fan of Luc Besson's work and the stuff he also produces/writes but this one isn't a home run like Taken [which he wrote, produced]

and at the very least watching 90 minutes of Scarlett Johansson is time well spent

Personally, I think it kills theatrical ticket sales. If you know when the DVD or BD or digital version is being released, one can think, "I'll just wait for that."

IMO, the industry is is committing a long, slow suicide. They should never announce pre-orders until the movie has finished its theatrical run. At the very least, they should wait until after two weeks of the theatrical run.

I agree ZoetMB. You have something there. Let them figure it out the hard way.

They've been doing this for a year or two now (if not longer). You think they'd still be doing it if the data even hinted at a direct link between early pre-orders and declining ticket sales? We're talking about a multi-billion dollar industry here, they've clearly looked at the data by now, and very likely aren't seeing any adverse effects to having them up. There are so many factors involved with ticket sales, including the kind of movies out that year, 3D films, etc...It's not something you can just pin down to one thing, and certainly not something as insignificant as having a pre-order or placeholder up.

Yep. And the data seems to show relatively flat ticket sales over the past decade.

How many people from the general public actually come to Bluray.com and check out preorder dates and decide they're not going to see this movie? The amount of members on this site is so minuscule compared to the amount of people who go to the movies. And how many members on this site that go to the movies actually will wait because of a preorder date?
This means absolutely nothing.

If people don't go see a movie just because the pre-order is up, that's just sad.

Yes, a theatrical release is no longer considered a primary money-making activity, especially given the high production and advertising budgets of today's tentpoles. Rather, the theatrical release is merely part of the marketing strategy for a movie's eventual release on various content delivery platforms.

I've been disappointed with everything Besson has done since LEON. He's overrated. Having said that, I'm going to watch this tomorrow but mainly because there's nothing else

I'm sorry but this is complete and total BS. It's just a pre-order listing and there is no date attached to it. It's not like the studio is coming out and saying this title will be available on home video on xx/xx/xx the day the film hits theaters. On top of that how many people outside of forums such as this one even realize that these films even have a pre-order available. You have the online shoppers who may come across the pre-order on Amazon or some other site and then you have the shoppers that still go predominately the B&M route. The B&M shoppers may see an advertisement in store that the title is coming and that could still be close to the release date.

You want to know whats really killing ticket sales in theaters? Rising ticket and concession prices. On a typical trip to the movies for two people on any given night I will spend $21 for the tickets and then potentially another $10 on a small bag of popcorn and a small soda and the prices only go up considerably as the sizes get larger. At the end of the night it can end up costing anywhere from $31 to $45 dollars for the same thing I could get from a $25 purchase at say Walmart or Target (Blu-ray, Popcorn, Soda) and at that point I own the movie. I'm sure I've seen other people post ticket prices that are way higher then what I have posted and at some point people make the call that it's just too expensive to go to the movies and will just wait until they can buy it for the same price or lower and own it.

Am saying never go to the movies again no but for some people it's just easier to justify waiting to buy it then it is to go to see it in theaters.

Agreed. Movie theater prices keep going up while Blu-ray/DVD prices just keep going down. It gives people more of a reason not to go to the movies. But I still like going to the movies because it gives me something to do besides staying inside the house.
