Default Displaying steelbooks: open or sealed?

So I finally got around to picking up some of those fossil stands on eBay and want to start lining the top of my media stands with the steelbooks I want to display. However, I'm having the hardest time bringing myself to open some of them. I really don't want to display them with all the "promotional" material on them, but there are certain ones (Iron Man 1 and 2 from Play.com, for example) that I feel like it's not in my best interest to open.

I have absolutely zero intentions of ever getting rid of any of them, but something in the back of my mind just doesn't want to let me depreciate their values just so I can unwrap them. Thoughts?

I would say if you think you might sell them keep them sealed. If not then open the dam things, enjoy the movie and the display

They look better with all the cardboard off anyway.

I absolutely agree. Especially about the appearance. I just can't...bring myself...to do it...

About 98% of my steelbooks are double-dips that I picked up strictly because I liked the movie and loved the art enough that the combination made it a worthwhile purchase in my eyes. So enjoying the actual movie doesn't necessitate cracking open the steelbook.

Ah, the age old question....

All depends what you want to do, not what others think. There are many here who are happy to buy everything and keep them sealed and minty fresh, others like me rip off the cellophane within seconds of getting home and watch the films inside (I know...what a crazy concept!)

If you have no intention of ever selling them why worry about depreciating values? That says to me you would sell them or are more concerned about their future value than you want to admit, if your just wanting something nice to look at that will be worth money in the future, stop buying steelbooks and buy a Rolex ....

Worst part about removing the cardboard and plastic... you'll probably find some hidden dents and scratches...

Open and enjoy. All your sealed up shit might be dented under the seal and that makes Steelbooks sad.

I blame peer pressure! Go hard or go home, right?

Man, though, that is one fine looking steelbook.

It's always best to open. Nothing worse than selling something on eBay only for the buyer to come back and tell you that your investment had something wrong with it all those years.

Also, putting a load of sealed Blu-rays on your shelves makes you look like a bit of a dork to anyone other than fellow dorks... in my very humble opinion, of course.

Finally, it's fun to watch the films you've spent money on.

Now then, dont you feel better for that? and just think, if you had left it sealed you wouldnt have had the chance to admire the exclusive Iron Man 2 internal artwork

I do feel better actually. And it's exclusive? I wasn't aware. I do absolutely love the back covers (of both 1 and 2). They were worth opening them for alone.

sealed copy ALWAYS command more re-sale value in the after-market space.

if you don't care about the value, then open it up and enjoy the beauty. Oh, 50/50 of the time, you'll be disappointed when you open it and you find little ding and dents behind the slipcover or shrinkwrap hahahha. That's part of this hobby....you get good or bad ones...

I always prefer to open them. How can you truly appreciate the artwork if it's covered with data sheets, stickers or price tags?

I open and watch all of mine, I have 13 only.

But, did buy a copy of John Carter last trip to Taipei, knowing I can sell it. IDK, still on the fence on whether to open it or not. Only found the one copy, out of five stores, so thinking if keeping it. Luckily, I have a few unwatched to watch before I decide. Other than that, I open all of mine, cannot stand the Chinese slips, or data sheets.

when I say 'exclusive' I mean in as much as they mixed up the internal artwork for 1 and 2 somewhere along the line in production so Iron man has Iron man 2's internal art and vise versa, so unless the same mistake is repeated if the steels ever get another release, these ones have exclusive (some would say incorrect, but exclusive sounds so much better dont you think ) artwork
