Default Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

Does anyone know if Fox has plans to release a BD version of "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" in the relatively near future (i.e., within six months or so)? I would love to have it in high-def. But, barring that, I'll just order the standard 2-DVD special edition.

I have the same question for the 2006 western "The Proposition."

I have it on pre-order with amazon.co.uk.

Delivery estimate: 23 Feb 2008 - 28 Feb 2008... However the site now lists it as "This title will be released on December 14, 2008".

Who knows... maybe it's a typo on the webpage or it has been bumped

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid debuts on BD this Tuesday (5/13). Unfortunately, I just read a less than flattering review of the BD in terms of picture quality. I'll wait to see what others say, but I'll be greatly disappointed if this review is spot on.

wow. Well, I loved the movie. William Goldman is one of my favorite writers both for the screen and literature. I feel Bracke speaks out of his ass half the time. But then again, so do most critics. It sucks the a/v didn't get the treatment it deserves. I'm sure Sony would have done a better job. You hear that FOX!

This is officially the worst looking BD I've seen to date, and it's not even close. My girlfriend commented that it looks worse than the upconverted DVD’s we play. It's an absolute travesty that FOX put the movie on BD in this condition. I'm stunned that a movie of this stature wouldn't get the proper frame-by-frame restoration it deserves. I never thought I’d say this, but stick with the DVD. The BD is pure crap!

In response to the bad reviews quoted, film restoration expert Robert Harris has given it a glowing review:

Very nice review. With the quality work that Fox is turning out now, I figured that they were probably getting some undue criticism with Butch & Sundance. I watched it on Blu this past Friday and found nothing to complain about. I'm also old enough to remember seeing it in the theater. You're not going to make a 40-year old film look like Narnia no matter what you do. I'm very satisfied with the purchase.

It's just being re-released in digibook packaging. Fox are doing this with a number of their movies, including Patton as well.

Lame. I'm sorry to hear they are not doing a new transfer. I love this film, but did not pick it up on blu ray due to the reviews on the transfer.

Not a glowing review here, but again given it's age. Oh, well. Restoration is in order ... but not a train wreck either ..

Angry This A/V quality should be amazing! What gives?!

How did this not get an excellent restoration? This film is beloved by all, seen as a classic by all, and heralded as a great piece of cinema. Don't give me the whole "it's an old film". BS! I've seen Charlie Chaplin movies look astonishing. Barry Lyndon?! All old movies an they look phenomenal. They need to take care of this movie and re-release it! I love this film and will certainly buy this Blu-ray if this is my only option. It just seems like a no brainer to get this one done right the first time. C'mon!

Yes, very disappointing to see a iconic film like this get such poor treatment. With this new sale at Amazon I'm now torn on this one. Take the chance we'll never see a better transfer in the future and get it, or pass on it.
I'm grabbing Tora! and Hustler, but can't decide on this one. Maybe I'll get it anyway, and if a better version is released someday I'll have the digibook to put it in at least.

"Once parts of the original negative are damaged or gone, there is nothing to be done but to rely on preservation elements produced at the time. But the truth about those elements is that normally they were vaulted without a care -- literally never examined or tested to see if they would answer back in case of a problem. I'm not referring to Fox here. I'm referring to the industry.

And there are some problems.

Those among you who fit into the nit-picker category will note dupe sections, which appear derived from separation masters. They have a bit of flicker, some discoloration at the bottom of the frame, occasional dirt and other assorted discoloration anomalies.

Grain haters will also have a field day, as Butch was (I believe) photographed on Eastman 5254, the same stock as Bullitt and all of the films of the early '70s. It has a magnificent grain structure, and wonderful color characteristics. This is actually one of my favorite film stocks.

The audio, both in 5.1 stereo as well as the original mono seem crisp and clean, especially as derived from the DTS HD Master tracks.

The truth, which is the bottom line, is that nit-picking is not in order here, as the surviving elements are what they are, and no amount of work, investment or complaining is going to change a thing.

Fox Home Video's Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid in Blu-Ray comes Extremely Highly Recommended. This is one not to be missed!

RAH"

One of my favorite films and I've been holding out for a new release/good price. Might have to go for the digibook at $11.99.
