Exclamation hd-ded players only at 1080i?

was checkin out the electronics dept at wally world, and noticed that they're selling hd-ded players and blu-ray players. blu-rays (sony, don't remember the model number) are going for $488.99 and hd-ded players are going for $250 sumpthin.

what caught my attention though was the technical specs on the tab below the sticker price.

on the hd-ded player it says that it plays 1080i hd-ded movies, and up-converts sd-ded movies to 1080i. NOTHING about 1080p whatsoever.

the sony blu-ray player displayed the brilliant gold 1080p logo, and testified to 7.1 HD audio.

I just can't fathom why people think they're getting the REAL HD deal when the damned hd-ded players themselves don't even project a 1080p picture? boggles my mind. it actually makes me a little angry because it seems that the big boys behind hd-ded are playing off the gullability of the average consumer. they may think they're getting full hd quality because it says HD-ded, but they're not. they're getting sub-par PQ, and definitely below par AQ.

BUT, i was happy to see that one of the blu-ray players had been sold. they only had 2 of each kind of player for sale, and only 1 was left for the sony. i really wanted to buy one, just impulsively, but i already have a ps3 and only 1 hdtv in the house, so it would really be pointless to purchase a blu-ray player right now. but just to make it up, i went ahead and picked up a copy of POTC: dead man's chest. figured i gotta have the second one if i already have the first. it makes sense in my head.

Most likely you saw the Toshiba A2 player which only does 1080i the higher unit A20 does 1080p. Its a marketing ploy for people with only a 1080i tv, they feel they are over paying for a 1080p player or at least the stupid people i talk to. Either way, that player has been out for a long time.

ps the sony player was probably the BDPS300

The rock band Styx sang about this little problem with Toshiba way back in the 70's:

"The Grand Illusion"

TRIVIA: This album was eerily released on 7/7/77.

also noticed thatin my crutchfield, the 300$ hd-dud player only goes to 1080i, i loled when i saw that, and then the 400$ hd-dud player said 1080p, kinda messed up to the consumer not saying to them its full 1080P, so even if the 200$ hd-dud player comes out it will problaly most likely be 1080i anyways

Even their players that can do 1080p only do it by internally deinterlacing from 1080i, even the high end ones that can do 1080p24 (which they can't do without major lipsynch issues). So instead of taking the 1080p24 stream off the disc they go 1080p->1080i->1080p.
