Default Sound Remixes of films on Blu-ray Disc.

Can remixes of films on Blu-Ray Disc sound good on blu-ray? That is a question I've asked myself since the format started out in 2006. And my answer as a fan of movies and of the blu-ray format has always been if the sound mix stay's true to the original mix it can sound great but if it is not it can sound not so good. 2 examples I can think of are the re mixes on dvd of Jaws which is also coming out on blu-ray in August of this year and Superman The Movie which was re released on blu-ray in 2006 and 2011. In the case of both of those films those remixes they sound alot different than when they originally came out in theaters and on vhs and laserdisc in the home formats. Any comments are welcomed on this and thanks for reading.

Its an atrocity but completely commonplace.
They often sound great and fantastic- but its a newly created thing and thus dishonest.

Yeah I agree with you remixes on older films can sound great but a new remix from starch for a older movie I'm not favor of.

They need to have a "normal viewers remix" on home releases that don't have the volume at -10 and the explosions at +500. I don't have a soundsystem and I live in a dorm, I can't afford to be freaking out and grabbing the remote every 5 seconds because of how mis-matched the high and low points of the audio mix from the theater are.

Alternative solution: "volume A" and "volume B", similar to "last channel", so that you can have shortcuts for "soft talking mode" and "loud explosions mode".

Yeah, I am not looking forward to hearing Jaws in 7.1. At least Universal is throwing in the original mix, but it's in lossy. I don't understand why the studios can leave the original mix alone. Clean it up sure, but leave it in it's original number of channels. For example, if a film was recorded and shown theatrically in four track stereo then I expected a lossless 4.0 track like we received with The Poseidon Adventure.

Agreed just leave the original mix alone if it was recorded in 4 track or 6 track audio or mono release a 1.0 , 4.0 or 5.1 sound mix and don't make a whole new remix.

I would rather have Jaws in lossless mono as well. But how much of a difference would it make?

Plenty since the 7.1 (taken from the 5.1 used for the DVD releases) has re-recorded sound effects that are out of place. The rifle, pistol, explosion at the end, and several other sound effects sound terrible compared to that original mix. At least Universal is including it in DTS 2.0. However, I am disappointed in them that they didn't include the original mix for Conan the Barbarian, but this is Universal we're talking about who has the worst track record of the major studios for BD catalog titles.

Agreed. I did hear some complaints about Jurassic Park's DTS-HD 7.1 Audio for that blu-ray I would have rather had 5.1 mix for the jurassic park films they originally came out in theaters in 5.1 not 7.1.

I didn't mean that. I meant how much difference would a lossless mono presentation be to the lossy mono presentation. Not much.

Clarity and fidelity are definitely improved. The space difference in a lossy 1.0/2.0 track and a lossless 1.0/2.0 is negligible, which is why I can't understand why Warner and Paramount have released so many of their classics in lossy mono.

I guess it depends on the film, but I have both the U.S. and U.K. blus of Psycho, and I couldn't tell one bit of difference between the U.S. lossy mono and the U.K. lossless mono.

Just out of curiosity, did you make that comparison using your center channel only with both titles?

I misunderstood your post. Yes, I played them through the center speaker only and they sounded identical. I am not speaking for everyone, nor every title, but I cannot tell the difference.

It's cool. I was just making sure as some people like that Full Mono setting where 1.0 is spread to all channels, which ruins the track.

I actually cant believe how somebody would post something so incorrect and offensive.
Really, it's posts like that paint the board as a bunch of low-functioning J6p'ers.

But can you do tell the difference between a 5.1 lossy and lossless track?
