Default IGN top 25 horror movies of all time.

Quote:
Coming up with a list of Top 25 Horror Films is a good way to weed out the manly sort from the pants pissers. You can spot 'em every time a jump scare happens, or a devil-possessed girl crab walks upstairs, or an alien missiles out of some poor bastard's chest.

A lot of big, fat scaredy cat tears were shed as we revisited the best of the best scary movies, just in time for All Hallow's Eve. Using overall movie quality, impact on the genre, legacy potential, fright/creepy factor and Editor's Choice, we assembled a list of movies that guarantee your date will want to stay the night, unless of course she grows tired of telling you to "stop crying 'Mommy'" or is too busy making fun of you for sleeping with a blankey to keep Freddy, Jason and Michael Myers away.

With each member of the Top 25, we cut right to the good part and call out a scary scene you need to watch with the lights on. Some of the movies here are more traditional horror fare, others are just damn twisted and creepy in a "permanently scarred for life" sorta way (e.g. The Silence of the Lambs). But all of them will scare the living s!@# out of you. So enjoy, and fire off your suggestions and hate-fueled opinions in the comments.

25. Friday The 13th (1980)
24. Scream
23. Dracula (1931)
22. The Haunting (1963)
21. The Blair Witch Project
20. Suspiria
19. Let The Right One In
18. An American Werewolf In London
17. Dawn Of The Dead (1978)
16. A Nightmare On Elm Street (1984)
15. The Thing
14. The Fly (1986)
13. Poltergeist
12. The Ring
11. Halloween (1978)
10. Night Of The Living Dead (1968)
09. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
08. Rosemary's Baby
07. Bride Of Frankenstein
06. The Shining
05. The Silence Of The Lambs
04. Alien
03. Jaws
02. Psycho
01. The Exorcist

Overall i think it is a pretty interesting list. I for the most part like it but i would movie things around like Halloween which is too low. Also no Evil Dead on the list is and it makes me . So what do you guys think of their top 25 list? I also wonder how it will compare to our top 31.

Here is the link for anyone that want to read their reasons for why movies are where they are on the list.

Good list, I've seen every movie on this list. Yeah where is The Evil Dead?

Yeah, Halloween needs to be in the top 5. Also have a new word, pants pissers. I plan on using that on a few friends.

The Orphanage can't be excluded if LTROI and Scream are included. Far superior horror film, IMO.

Jaws and SOTL ahead of The Shining? I think not. Then again, Jaws and SOTL are great horror films and do belong on the list, but just not ahead of The Shining.

Good so others agree with me that The Evil Dead should be on there and Halloween should be higher.

It is a good movie but imo Scream must stay because it is the movie that single handedly brought back the slasher genre. I love the movie and it belongs where it is. I think they did a great job of picking movies from many decades and different types remember you can't please everyone.

Well, Orphanage brought back the Shining-genre, so there Personally, Halloween '78 is one of my all-time favs and I was fine with leaving that masterful beauty Rest In peace

SCream is a great horror film, no doubt about it. But personally, its not going to keep me up at night like The Orphanage will.

Good list but I don't think Halloween, Friday the 13th and Scream should be so far down the list. Could also just be me but I don't count Alien as a horror film as it's a sci-fi film so I wouldn't even have that on the list.

Alien may have a sci-fi setting, but it's very much a horror movie.

Nightmare on Elm Street being before Friday The 13th is all I really care about. Wouldn't hurt if they had included Tourist Trap though.

Exactly. I'd have more foreign films on there as well. But this is a good 'start'. Silence of the Lambs, while a good movie, isn't in my top 25.

No Bruce Campbell IGN!

Really sad to see that Halloween and the Thing are so far down the list and that The Evil Dead didn't even make it I mean, really? I think Halloween is probably my favorite horror movie of all time, followed by Psycho, The Exorcist, The Thing, and The Evil Dead. Those are great horror cinema.

All in all, it's a solid list. I just think some things should be moved around on it and that The Evil Dead should definitely me added to it

Great movie, but I doubt anyone at IGN has heard of it.

Yeah I Know What You Did Last Summer did help but i came out a year after Scream so Scream gets most of the credit. Also the Scream movies are just overall better. Scream 1 beats IKWYDLS 1 and Scream 2 kills IKWYDLS 2. And Scream 3 is nowhere near as good as 1 and 2 it still is 100% better then the 3rd IKWYDLS.

Yeah Scream was the movie that brought back the slasher genre for horror fans. I do agree that the Scream franchise beats IKWYDLS franchise even though the 3rd INWYDLS movie was just awful and had nothing to do with the first 2 movies scream 3 was just better overall.

I agree with u but its very close in my book. The first film in each of the series was absolutely great although I would say Scream is a hair better than IKWYDLS. I may be in the minority but I liked ISKWYDLS a lot and Im not sure if I like Scream 2 better or that one so its very close. But where it takes the cake is the 3rd film in each series. Scream 3 was definitely inferior to the first 2 but still a decent film but that crap call IAKWYDLS is just beyond terrible and the ending is dumb! Got Em!!

I mean the 3rd film did have sumthin to do with the first two but in a stupid way haha. Got Em!!

Not a bad list. A nice mix of eras and styles.

And +1 re Halloween. I'm not a big fan of the slasher sub-genre (I prefer my horror more toward the gothic end of the spectrum) but even I would acknowlege that Halloween is clearly a classic and deserves to be more highly ranked.

I don't understand people who put Silence of the Lambs on a horror list and Clockwork Orange on a sci-fi list. Just because they have a small hint of horror and sci-fi in them, respectively, don't necessarily make them.
