Default Total Noob

Been a big fan of blu-ray for a long time, however I have never taken advantage of the full audio capabilities that blu-ray comes with. I currently have my ps3 hooked up to my tv, and my dvd player (Philips HTS3555) hooked up to the TV via RCA? (white/red cables). The sound coming from the speakers sounds really good, however I am wondering with my current set-up is there anyway to experience better sound quality?

In the PS3 display option I have seen DTS, Dolby Digital, and Linear PCM, under the audio option, however I don't know the reason for the change.

Also I am looking to upgrade to a receiver when the summer finally hits. I am looking for the best I can get for around 800-900 bucks.

If you have an optical port on your receiver, you should connect your PS3 to that and make sure to tell the PS3 to use the optical port for sound.
If you can upgrade to HDMI, do it. Nothing beats HDMI.

Speakers are connected to DVD player.
DVD player is connected to TV via RCA cables.

I'm still confused . . . when you say the speakers are hooked up to the DVD payer . . . do you have a home theater in a box type deal, where the DVD player is built into the receiver?

Yea it is home theater in a box, after some more research I have found it only does Dolby Digital and DTS. Thanks for trying to help.

If you have an optical input, use that from the PS3 into your receiver/DVD player. At least that way you'll get DD and DTS.

For 800-900 bones you can get a pretty good receiver. The Onkyo 605, 705, and 805 all come highly recommended, and the Pioneer Elite 91 is about 1k, but can be found online for less.
