PS3 to play 1080i.

Hi. I have an 80 gig PS3 that does workhorse duties as a BD player, and have found recently that it is playing my BBC 1080i titles in 1080p, according to my Toshiba Regza Full HD screen. I'd rather it played the titles natively rather than upscaling it to 1080p. What settings do i need to get this set up correctly? Thanks!

I would guess unchecking 1080p in your settings would do that for you.

I've experienced something similar. My old fat 80GB PS3 would play 1080i titles in 1080i, but my new Slim model seems to play everything in 1080p.

I will have to have a look myself,I'll try later and see if Planet Earth(1080i)plays at 1080p.

mine is set to 1080p but it shows the xmb menu in 1080i haha, then switches pt p for blu ray

Your TV is playing in 1080p anyways, which is probably why the PS3 is outputting 1080p.

Plasma and LCD output progressive, while rear projection/CRT can output interlaced.

So even if you set the PS3 to output 1080i, your progressive display will output 1080p natively.

Fixed Pixel Displays

Despite the differences between Plasma, LCD, and DLP televisions, there is one thing they share in common.

Plasma, LCD, and DLP TVs have a finite number of screen pixels, thus they are "fixed-pixel" displays. Input signals that have higher resolutions must be scaled to fit the pixel field count of the particular Plasma, LCD, or DLP display. For example, a typical 1080i HDTV broadcast signal needs a native display of 1920x1080 pixels for a one-to-one point display of the HDTV image.

However, since Plasma, LCD, and DLP televisions can only display progressive images, 1080i source signals are always either deinterlaced to 1080p for display on a 1080p TV, or deinterlaced and scaled down to 768p, 720p, or 480p depending on the native pixel resolution of the specific TV. Technically, there is no such thing as a 1080i LCD, Plasma, or DLP TV.

My tv doesn't give i or p as info but when playing Planet Earth(1080i)it shows 1920x1080@50hz and when I have a movie playing it shows 1920x1080@24hz.
Are they both not interlace and progressive respectively?

yes, Planet Earth is 1080i...but if you have a digital display, you have a fixed pixel display...which is progressive. Your TV will always output in progressive (p).

50hz and 24hz both refer to the refresh rate of your TV to correctly display the frame rate of the picture. Most "movie" bluray's are filmed at 24fps = 24Hz.

But when I was using my old PS3, my TV always showed 1080i when playing 1080i Blu-rays.

also keep in mind, I believe there is two versions of Planet Earth...

The UK version with David Atenbrough is 1080p, while the USA with Sigourney Weaver is 1080i?

Without going into the different variables of using an old PS3 vs new PS3...different hardware, settings, defaults etc

If your TV is a Plasma, LCD or DLP you will never have a native interlaced image. It will always be de-interlaced, aka progressive.

yeah, there was a huge deal about this way back when...I believe it was a misprint. (you can google "Planet Earth 1080i or 1080p?" and see the mass confusion )

the bluray review on here details as 1080p.

(gosh just thinking about the whole Planet Earth 1080i or 1080p issue brought back some anxiety...I remember when it all went on, I just had to order my copy from the UK amazon! Sigourney Weaver just did not cut it!)

Trust me, just trying to figure it out is mind boggling...which is why it was such a mess back in the day! (too many different versions! )
