Default 1080p Compared to the Cinema's?

What resolution are do we see in standard Movie theaters and how does it compare to a 1080p HDTV?

Just a noobish curious question.

35mm film resolution is still quite a bit higher than HD, however the actual quality of the image can vary. And the quality of the prints in the theater can also vary, like scratches, dirt, breaks, so its quite possible to get the impression your 1080p image is better than the one you saw in the theater

2K is very similar to 1080p (totally just over 2 million pixels), 4K is about 8 million pixels in total (approx 4 times the total pixels of HD and 2K) and it's about double the amount of pixels both vertically and horizontally. There's the numbers. The reality is when you are watching on a gigantic screen, you are not as impressed with the resolution as watching HD on a nice small screen. When you are watching 35mm, it's an optical transfer which has generational loss. Digital Cinema doesn't have that problem. If it was shot on 35mm, the optical master should be compiled through negative cutting, leaving no generational loss then digitized. In my opinion, this wouldn't be as bad as then doing an optical transfer prints for distrubution.

I do not find cinema movies as appealing as I used too. 1080p at home on the 50" is better to me.

My guess is that you haven't been to a great theater recently then. The theaters that we build easily outperform any plasma on the market. I find that the higher resolution makes a much bigger difference the large the screen so 1080p has really helped.

After upgrading to Blu, I am less satisfied with cinema each time I visit the theater. It is a nice theater with state-of-the-art equipment, but it doesnt wow me with clarity and detail. The big screen is for sure still my friend because I like the experience of going out and the BIG screen and big sound.

Do you like the clean look of the Blu? I find a lot of people watching HD and used to video don't like the cinema or movies as much because of the film grain. I like the film grain as it is an artistic element that is added to the film that most people do not notice.

I think it depends on the venue but every time I go to the movies I find my self thinking man I can't wait to see and hear this on blu-ray.The numbers may be what they may but it just seems like movies sound better and look better and are just more immersive at home now and I have a very modest set up I think.

Ill agree that the DLP theaters have a great PQ. THAT being said, the nornal theaters PQ sucks. I caught Iron Man at my local theater last weekend, and the PQ made me beg for the bluray that Im going to buy in a couple of mo's. I have yet to see a cinema in my area that matches my plasma at 1080p. Ill give you the fact we are comparing two diff screen sizes BUT, if I had to choose itd be Panny 1080p and Blu-ray.

The DLP's are nice, thats how I saw Transformers. The Cinema in my area looks terrible, when I watched Iron Man I kept thinking I should have just waited and bought it.

the only way to really compare would be to stretch your 1080p plasma to movie screen size, if you could do that you would see how good a proper theater could be. I saw Iron Man at my local theater that is only a couple of years old and it was stunning.

I dont doubt the DLP studios are nice, like I said Transformers was awesome. However, my theater here is not and it kinda sucks. The large screen size is nice, but not the most important thing to me (not the size that counts )

Then there's ticket prices. Im not a cheapy by any stretch, but tickets for $10 a pc, then $6 popcorn and drink is just ridiculous.

Im very happy staying home with Blu-ray and a large bowl of popcorn, or a cold bowl of ice cream.

Same here. But the girlfriend does like to go to the movies. I prefer at home on HD, but I can't always win that battle.

Remember the cinemas still do 24 frames per second...when I saw Speed Racer I could really see the motion blur. Can't wait to see it at 60 fps
