Default Wing Commander - August 13, 2013

I don't see a thread here for this, so I figured I'd make one. I can't be the only one excited for this, can I? No details, but it's likely to be a pretty barebones release. I think this one unfairly got a bad rap. It's a pretty fun film, with some excellent space battles and tons of sci-fi action. Great effects too.

- This takes balls!
- Mine are bigger!

Actually this is one of my favorite so-bad-it's-fun-movies. Lots and lots of cheesy dialogue, scenery-chewing and the Kilrathi are among the worst SFX ever created. Space fighters that look like Vietnam-era jets with their wings sawed off? Check. Actually I think they were eaxctly that - scrapped BAC Lightnings - and Prochnow strutting about and ranting about pings and broadsides and torpedoes has to be one of the most brilliant casting choices ever.

I thought the effects in this were very impressive and I saw it earlier this year on HDTV and the effects still hold up very well.

The packaging is of course dreadful. I wouldn't have expected otherwise.

It's kind of funny that the cut scenes from the games (WC3 and WC4) are actually better than this movie. Also the movie has Freddie Prince Jr., the games have Mark Hamill, Tom Wilson, John Rhys-Davies and Malcom McDowell!

I will get this anyway but I always thought it would have been better if they shot additional scenes for the game cut scenes to make them work as a movie...

It has a nice intro and some nice visual effects during the start of the movie but it is still blasphemous movie for fans of the Wing Commander game series.

I don't think people should view this expecting it to follow the video game series. Like Final Fantasy - The Spirits Within, I think it's fine as long as long as you don't go in expecting it to please fans of the games series. It's more like a stand-alone film with some ideas taken from the games.

The first Wing Commander was a PC game and required serious horsepower at the time, too. Like a state-of-the-art 386 CPU at a dazzling 25MHz, a VGA card and a whooping 4 megs of RAM.

Anchor Bay titles are usually region A locked.

I know, but not all of them. And I really want Wing Commander, but have a Region B blu-ray player.

Amazon seems to be listing the Aspect Ratio at 1.85:1... I hope this is a typo... I emailed Anchor bay for confirmation but no reply yet. The proper ratio is 2.35:1 . Walmart.ca is listing the correct ratio but... Remains to be seen. Since walmart is mission other pertinent info on the release I'm hoping everything is fine and that all the listings are messed up.

There's a slight chance that it's also an opened up matte though as I've seen evidence that some of the foreign HD broadcasts were showing a version like that.

I have such a soft spot for this movie. My favorite video games when I was a kid were Wing Commander III and IV. I really hope Anchor Bay doesn't screw up the AR. It's listed on amazon as 1.85.1, but it's a scope film. Also, it comes out tomorrow.

I remember seeing this in theaters, ONLY because it had the newer (at the time of course) Star Wars Episode I trailer before the movie.

The movie did suck pretty bad though. The crap CGI, terrible design/constumes, and horrible horrible casting were enough to make this one of if not THE worst movies of 1999. Freddie Prinze Jr.? Mathew Lillard?...the hell were they thinking?

I'm hoping Amazon just got it wrong.. cd universe is listing these as specs :
Blu-ray Disc Features: Widescreen - 2.35 Audio: Dolby True HD 5.1 - English

I have a big soft spot for this movie too. It's not that it's a good film but I enjoy it anyway. I kinda wish we were getting all the deleted material on this release but I'm pretty sure this will just be a bare bones disk.

Also anybody complaining about the CG in this movie needs to rewatch it in HD. The kilrathi effects are notoriously awful but the actual CG holds up remarkably well for a 1999 movie.
