Disney Disney continues to not care for old stuff

Disney continues to not care for old stuff.

After seven months this year they have only released one feature film remaster in Alice through the Looking Glass and that was only done because of Apple's new 3D support. And even with that they haven't been bothered to make any more titles available in 3D on Apple or Disney+ since the launch.

People were excited over the deal with Sony but Disney said it was just like what they were doing in other markets: getting someone else to distribute them. And even then, Sony is overrated. Yeah, they do some high quality releases but I should hope so for a company that helped make the format. They have tons of movies in 4K they can't be bothered releasing on 4K despite them doing well. Also how are the Ghost Rider movies not on 4K? They love milking Marvel lol.

Since Bob Iger returned in around November 2022, only four Disney branded movies have had remasters released. Just four. Some companies do that in a month never mind a 100th anniversary. And I will also point out they released a handful of 4K remasters on Disney+ right before he returned and then things stopped. I seriously wonder if he had things cancelled.

And people will blame Disney+ but their treatment of the service has also been a joke. I won't say much about a lot of the time it's just a service for Disney Junior, docos and Asian imports but more importantly they rarely add or update anything old. USA has been getting a few more things recently through Hulu but some parts of the world already have those things although not all since Disney doesn't care.

They also removed hundreds of things from Disney+ permeantly last year making most of them impossible to watch legally in any way. Over a year later and nothing's changed.

It's pretty telling despite how big Marvel is for them that they still haven't added The Incredible Hulk (2008) worldwide. They can't even be bothered releasing 4K remasters of the first 2 Wolverine movies despite a certain new movie that was always going to be huge.

Sure, they did start releasing the live action Marvel and Star Wars series made for Disney+ on physical media but it's really strange they aren't on DVD or digital. Seriously, when has a title ever been released on 4K but not DVD or digital? And while it's great they have released those there's still so many more for them to release when you consider animated series and stuff that wasn't made for Disney+. Try listing all the Star Wars or Marvel content not currently available on Blu-ray from Disney and you will get annoyed when you think how about how it's sadly not going to ever happen with their lack of releases and their pace.

Like it's sad to think even when you don't count the six movies between Bambi and Cinderella or Black Cauldron and Dinosaur we are unlikely to ever get all the Disney Animation feature films on 4K. That's still 34 movies left when not counting those 8 after only releasing *3* since March 2020.

I am also thinking next year's Pixar movie (Elio) could skip 4K altogether when you consider how they have been treating new Disney branded releases on 4K since Bob Iger returned.

And as I always say, Alice in Wonderland (2010) is literally the only movie to gross a billion dollars at the box office to never be released in 4K. And considering how much the movie's success set up Disney's decision to remake so many of their movies it's shocking. And they never released Pirates 2-4 on 4K in their biggest market. That also makes no sense. And people will bring up how they think they are bad quality but clearly Disney doesn't care, they rarely remaster anything now so they clearly won't remaster these movies just because some people online have issues with what they did. They released them multiple times internationally after all.

It sucks it really does. I could go on. I will obviously continue to buy what they can be bothered to release in the future but it's sad so many things are going to be left incomplete even if they do release a few more things next year. People critized them for their waves of releases in 2019-March 2020 but thank god they did do those, otherwise we would have been screwed even more.

Nothing new here or surprising. Disney doesn't really care about physical media and they probably never will. They want every household on Disney+ even though content is lacking and largely poor. Before Inside Out 2 Disney had one title in the last two years that actually made money and that was Guardians of the Galaxy 3. As many have eloquently put it Disney is going to be Disney even if it means they crash and burn.

...despite having the highest-selling VHS tape (Lion King) DVD (Finding Nemo) and Blu-Ray (Frozen) to their credit...

The difference between disney today, and the failing disney of the 1980s, is that disney today is too big to fail.

Unlike banking institutions and airlines, I don't think anyone's going to lose any sleep over Disney "failing" - something that is unlikely to ever happen anyway. If they find themselves in too deep, they'll likely just sell themselves off. That day will have to be declared a Federal holiday

Disney in the 80s came very close to being bought and dismantled for parts. Twice.

Disney has always sucked about releasing anything old school or animated TV shows from any place and time. Also lets not forget Fox, we know Disney has for the most part.

I didn't know 20,000 Leagues was getting an UHD. This was undoubtedly the best ride that ever existed at Disney World.

Disney+ is a money loser and solution the execs there think is to force people off physical media which is where they told people to go after abandoning the market in Australia.

Drugs. And lots of it.
Physical sales in Australia were so low that it didn’t make sense financially to continue to release physical media there. You can’t expect a company to continue to release physical media where it’s not selling.

Q2 is going to be even better: the original cut of Star Wars, Song Of The South, and Moonlighting the complete series.

Ok, not sure Bolty is effin' with us, but IF true, makes logical sense...

First, Sony just started distributing discs for Disney officially on 7/30/24 with The First Omen. I'm sure putting a slate together isn't easy, and with the traditional 4th quarter crunch for getting product done, capacity will be limited, especially if these are all 4K releases.

Outside of Cocoon 2 and Splash (?!) all of these titles have had a Blu-ray release at some point. (20,000 Leagues Under the Sea had the DMC release)

All of the Apes, Alien and X-Men related films actually make sense, to cross promote with current films... It also helps that they're Sci-fi/Action which in general are good sellers.

Splash's 4K master has been sitting there for a while now... And as noted, never had a BD release.

Sound of Music is a standard release on all formats.

Mary Poppins should have had a 4K release when the sequel was done, actually stunned it didn't happen, because Disney marketing is usually on top of that stuff.

Splash was released on Blu-ray a decade ago in Australia. They didn't do Dumbo in 2019 either. They had plenty of reasons to release Ice Age, National Treasure, Santa Clause, Enchanted, Willow etc in 2022 but they didn't.

Even if you want to believe they aren't releasing anything because of the Sony deal you can't ignore the fact they have only released 4 Disney branded movies in 4K anywhere since Bob Iger returned at the end of 2022 and one of them was only because of Apple's 3D support. They could and have before released 4K remasters on digital and Disney+ without physical releases and because of that they had many titles like Santa Clause, National Treasure, Ice Age, Night at the Museum, Willow, Enchanted, Muppets and more sitting there in 4K.

There was nothing stopping them releasing more in their 100th anniversary. They literally had the Pirates sequels just sitting there on discs for North America but they couldn't be bothered.

If a company like Disney can't be bothered releasing their billion dollars grossing movies that is saying something about their leadership.

And people keep hoping 2025 is different but the simple truth is even if they release 3 Disney Animated movies on 4K each year for the rest of the decade we still won't have nearly all of them as that is just 15 when there's still a grand total of 42.

If you're going to list these as UHDs for 2025 and "Q1 of 2025" at that, you could at least tell us if this is speculation on your part or if you've heard from some inside source.
