I don't know about anyone else but I have a ton of TV Shows that are on DVD and not blu-ray and it is basically a waiting game to see if they will ever be released. Is it a good idea to just put all TV Shows on DVD that I haven't bought on the backburner and wait for the blu-ray or to go ahead and buy it on blu-ray?

I guess it really depends on how old the TV show is, and would it benefit from the blu upgrade. TV shows don't seem to be appearing on Blu at the speed they made it to DVD, and when they do it's sometimes in an odd way. For example, Big Bang Theory season 3, but not 1 or 2.
I don't buy movies on DVD anymore, but I recently picked up 'Miami Vice: The Complete Season' (used) on DVD. While it would look fantastic on blue I'm not sure it will ever be done. The cost for the music rights would be immense, and I'm not sure how well it originally sold. |

I won't buy DVDs of any current show, and for the ones that aren't released from season 1 I'm not getting either until the whole series is in BD. Older shows are a different story.
I was actually considering buying DH, but after the last 2-3 seasons, I'm glad they weren't released so I didn't waste my money, I'm just going to watch it once and be done with it. Last edited by megafan999; 06-21-2011 at 01:27 PM. |

I would really like to see the new show of Hawaii Five O However if it doesn't get a blu-ray release and DVD only I won't be seeing it ever.
It would be nice if more classic shows were released in HD on blu, but I know many tv shows can barely get released on DVD let alone BLU. Twilight Zone being an exception. |

I don't think you are going to see a lot of 'older' TV shows on blu-ray, unless they were very popular or the show has a certain niche. There has been talk of 'Friends' coming to blu-ray and maybe 'Seinfeld', but they were fairly big hits. I don't think you'll see the likes of 'The Jeffersons' or 'Family Affair' on blu-ray. I don't think the market is there (maybe one day, but not anytime soon).

I can understand the "older" shows not being on Blu, but these newer ones that are broadcast in HD, like the 2 I mentioned above, plus I am sure there are plenty of others, this just makes no sense, at least I can get the new V on Blu and True Blood

If I really want to own it, and it's only available on DVD, I'll buy the DVD. I can always upgrade later if it does eventually get a blu-ray release. A recent example was Archer: Season 1. I was bummed that they only released it on DVD, but that didn't stop me from nabbing it.

Nearly every TV show I want is on Blu-ray now. The only exceptions are Community and Parks and Recreation. I bought Community's first season on DVD and I'll probably buy season 2 as well because I don't think a Blu-ray is likely anytime soon and I want to watch it again. I haven't bought any seasons of Parks and Rec on DVD but the last season was amazing so I'll probably pick it up. |

It really depends upon how badly you want to watch/own the show. If I see a show I really like that isn't out on Blu, but is on sale for cheap on DVD, I will purchase it. TV doesn't really get the treatment it deserves on Blu-ray yet.

As much as I do prefer Blu-Ray quality and will choose BD over DVD when the option is available, I do still buy TV shows on DVD if there is no BD option.
There are some things that I just want to own and watch, and while the better quality of BD would be preferable, the content, itself, is more important to me than the video/audio quality (within reason, of course). Besides, I still have some older standard def CRT TVs laying around that I can watch these on (I find that the 'flaws' of DVDs don't stand out much at all on older TVs like the do on newer, bigger HDTVs), and the HDTV that I have in the bedroom is fairly small, so the flaws of DVDs don't really stand out on it. There are too many shows that don't seem like they are going to get a BD release... or in some cases had a BD release at some point but the studio decided not to release the newer seasons on BD. It's annoying sometimes having the same series split between DVD and BD (especially when it goes from DVD to BD then back to DVD), but I've decided just to say 'the hell with it' and just collect the show anyway, picking the BD where the option exists. So, yeah, I have seasons 1, 2, 3, and 5 of How I Met Your Mother on DVD, and have Season 4 on BD. I'm not thrilled out this split between them, but I'll live. At least I can still enjoy the show any time that I want to. |

I bought House S1-5 on DVD as they came out, S6 came out on BD as well as DVD so I stopped buying it and I haven't watched the show since the end of S5 yet. I'm not going to buy S6 on BD in case they don't release S1-5 in that format and I'm not going to buy S6 on DVD because I know there is a better version available. It's now a waiting game to see if the studios will listen to customer demand for popular TV shows on blu-ray and even obscure titles. I am a huge fan of animated TV series from the 1980s/1990s and I would pick up titles like Count Duckula, The Raccoons and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in a second on BD.
