Default Is 1080p possible via component?

Is 1080p possible via component instead of HDMI?

Thanks.

IF the image contraint token (ICT) is not enabled. If the ICT is enabled, the video must be down converted to 540p!

So, a flat statement in the world of Blu-ray is that 1080p is not possible over component video.

And PS3 1080p games? That should be possible though right?

as AV stated, it would in theory be possible. however, the game would either need to have its images rendered in 1080p or the player would need to upconvert.

The most recent issue of PSM mentioned that 1080p was possible even on models without HDMI. I thought that was odd because I always assumed that Component lacked the bandwidth or something to handle 1080p, but I guess not! Or PSM was wrong..

Sony did demo some 1080p games (Gran Turismo) at E3 last year. I do not know if it was demo'ed on HDMI or Component, however. It was demo'ed on Qualia TV sets of some sort (looked like high-quality LCD).

According to Sony, the base level PS3 without HDMI will allow 1080p gameplay. Since the best connection type available will be component video, then that is the only way it will be delivered to displays.

While I don't have a complete list, I do know that the newest Westinghouse 1080p LCD screen accepts 1080p over component.

As said though - Blu-ray over component is always limited to no more than 1080i resolution.

The Samsung 1080p DLPs and the new Pioneer plasmas will accept 1080p over component. I'm not entirely sure, but I may have read some where that the Samsung will output 1080p over component until ICT flags are implemented into the movies.

I'll test this theory later on at work and provide an update tonight.

Per Blu-ray specifications, this is not permitted. ICT has nothing to do with it. It is a specification of the format.

But, it could be - I don't own the player. I have never heard of anyone doing this though.

The player will not do 1080p over component, tested it today.

As far as TV's doing 1080p over component, the new Pioneers are the only ones I know of that are capable.

No - second time I will say this:

Blu-ray specifications say that over analog connections, the BEST output allowable (not possible) is 1080i. This has nothing to do with ICT. When ICT is enabled, the video must then be down converted to 540p before any output is allowed. If ICT is not enabled, 1080i is the best you get.

I do know for a fact that the newest Westinghouse accepts 1080p over component.

White Westinghouse makes TVs?

Since when? I only that my family has a 1989 White Westinghouse refrigerator but I didn't know that they were making TVs.

Are you sure this is referring to White Westinghouse? A member of the Electrolux Group?

Westinghouse - same company that makes refrigerators... Yes... and no.

My understanding, which is something I read a while ago, and I don't remember where...

Westinghouse was approached by a Korean manufacturer who wanted to begin releasing LCD displays in the USA. They had the product, but wanted a fairly well established US brand name and distribution channel by which they could deliver the displays. They approached a non-A/V CE company - Westinghouse, for the rights to the name and help with the distribution.

As it stands now, the Westinghouse LCDs have earned a reputation for one of the least expensive, high quality LCD displays on the market, and while not perfect, they tend to be value class leaders. A decent quality display, with exceptional feature set. Things like being one of the very first displays to accept 1080p. One of the first 1080p displays to exist at all. Larger LCD sizes at a fair price... Think 1920x1080 (1080p) 42" diagonal LCD with fully 1080p compatibility for about $2,000 delivered. Pretty nifty for the cash.

I believe Westinghouse is one of the leaders in pushing LCD prices down in the global market. Good product, exceptional prices - and a LOT of people buying them!
