United Kingdom Something of a "rant" about 3D releases

Hi,

I have an all-abiding interest in anything to do with 3D--comic books, Nintendo 3DS, lenticular posters; the list is endless. If it's 3D, it's mine!

But I'm beginning to get irritated by the current crop of 3D blu rays. While most of the films of this particular 3D era are fine and dandy, dandy and fine(to quote from 'Santa Clause the Movie'), they are not what the older 3D collector wants to see(I should know, I'm nearly 70).

So I have to ask, where are the older 3D movies in this current renaissance? Movies like, 'House of Wax', Hitchcock's 'Dial 'M' for Murder' from the 50s and, 'Jaws 3D' and the first 3D cartoon, 'Starchaser: Legend of Orin' from the 80s. Where are they?

I have heard that Tony Anthony is going to re-release 'Comin' at Ya'(a 3D spaghetti western) onto 3D blu ray but, so far, no release date is forthcoming. Hopefully if it does well some of the major distributors will sit up and take notice.

I mean, there are loads of 3D titles just begging to be put onto a shiny blu disc. Off the top of my head, 'It Came From Outer Space', 'Creature From the Black Lagoon' and its sequel, 'Revenge of the Creature' to name three. Why, even old Ed Wood got in on the act with his abysmal(but entertaining) 'Plan Nine From Outer Space'. Even George Pal thought of putting the end of his version of 'War of the Worlds' in 3D(at the point when the atom bomb is dropped).

So, come on Warner Bros, Universal and Paramount(and other studios with 3D movies in your vaults), give us oldies what we really want: older 3D movies.

What do you guys here at blu ray.com think? Or do you think I'm (to quote a Mel Brooks line from 'Blazing Saddles'), "just jerking off"?

John.

Would the old 3D system not be completely different from the way 3D is done now and therefore not work in the same way on current systems?

Apparently 3D Dial M is on the way.

I don't have any interest in most of the classic 3D movies, but if they ever release "Gorilla at Large", I'll get that one. That was the first 3D program I saw when I was a child. My local NBC affiliate aired it, and made a big deal about it. I had to go to 7-11 to get the anaglyph glasses. I guess that's what first got me interested in 3D.

I am interested in seeing the 3D versions of Creature From The Black Lagoon, Revenge of the Creature and The Creature Walks Among Us (was the third one in 3D?). I know they are all in glorious black and white, but I've been a fan of The Creature forever. Seeing them in 3D would be a treat.

There was supposed to be a reboot in the works starring Bill Paxton, but it seems to have been scrapped.

I remember seeing that local airing too, and it's a good example of what the Warner exec was saying at the last CES when he complained that "Most of the 50's 3-D movies, you don't even KNOW were in 3-D".
And he was right: Although conversion didn't exist back in the 50's, it was still often a last-minute studio-marketing decision to film it that way, and pasted onto B-projects that had absolutely no pop-out or depth value whatsoever.
We probably got more 3-D Westerns than flying-saucer movies.

Dial M, House of Wax and Kiss Me, Kate were the native-envisioned Hugo and Avatar of their day, and THOSE are the ones reportedly being looked at by Warner as we speak.
Jaws and Creature are Universal, and if you're looking for Universal catalog anything, get in freakin' line, pal. Starchaser and Amityville are "MGM trashbin", fresh off of ThisTV (although the 2-D version of Amityville finally got its "3-D" back in the title, for some odd reason), and if Paramount develops an interest in 3-D after their Marvel movies and Tintin, I wouldn't rule Friday the 13th III out of the equation on brandname marketing, but that's pure speculation.
Sony's teased us with The Mad Magician and the two Stooges shorts, but they're too chicken to put them on disk, and just have them up on PS3 Store for purchase only. (I'm all for 3-D, but I ain't paying $29.99 for a Shemp short.)

I'd quote a movie line completely out of context here for absolutely no attention-deficit reason, but I...can't think of any at the moment.

Uh....no he didn't.
(You're probably thinking of Phil Tucker's Robot Monster bringing in the Billion Bubble machine to take advantage of the format. Don't worry, I used to get them confused all the time, too.)

I think when more people buy 3D tvs and the 3D blu rays start flying off the shelves, we'll start to see a lot more 3D classics. Big companies that own the rights are usually very cautious when it comes to spending money. Blu Ray also costs a lot more to make at this time compared to DVD, though they could still do stereo 3D on a DVD, provided the 3D tv allows for side by side 3D.

I want to see Creature from the Black Lagoon in stereo 3D too. I saw in anaglyph back on TV, Soupy Sales was the host if I remember.

I truly wish/hope that you're correct about 3d flying off the shelves. But I just don't see that happening........EVER!
There are too many purists and people who just don't want to change even if it's a good/great title. Something must be lodged in their brains that they can't accept a cool new format when done correctly. As long as the format is out there and there's at least some descent titles coming down the line, I really don't care if it's only a handful of other people and I keeping this format alive. Even though a handful won't do it.

I too would love to see some of the classics, but obviously they'll have to be post conversion. Hell at this point, as long as it's a good title and they do a half way descent job, I sure the hell don't care if it's a conversion or not.

Yeah, Creature from the Black Lagoon sounds great Why not?

Well, I am an 80s child and would be ecstatic to see Friday the 13th part 3 in 3D, Jaws 3D, Amityville 3D, Space Hunter 3D, Metalstorm, Treasure of the Four Crowns, Comin at Ya, Parasite.... I doubt they ever do come out, but you never know. We said for decades that we would never see Friday The 13th 3 3D and it did get a blu ray release with the anaglyphic type.

I sure hope all 3D films eventually get a release!

I think purist is the wrong term. I mean,a purist would want to see the work as the director/cinematographer intended, correct? Well, most 3d films were conceived that way from the pre-production stage. I think movies like Avatar, Hugo, etc. actually lose something when "flattened out".

Why would they need to be converted? Creature from the Black Lagoon, It Came from Outer Space, Dial M for Murder and more were originally shot in 3d for their initial release. Assuming the original elements are available and in decent shape, the transfer shouldn't be much more challenging than any other restoration/mastering from the same era.

I do have Amityville 3D on a field-sequential DVD that works with my 3DVision laptop, and... it's native, sure, but the 3D has some problems. Mostly massive window violations all the time, but probably the worst bit is one entire scene, at least a couple minutes long, where one lens seems to have been out of focus. Quite disorienting to watch. When the effect works well it's rather impressive, but it has some of the issues that today would doubtless lead to the scene going back to a 2D source and having a conversion company fix it.

Question Should more old 3D films be released on 3D Blu-ray

I just heard about the Universal Horror release, great news itself. Then I read that Creature in the Black Lagoon will have it's 3D release included. I was tickled that it be included.

I really like that some studios are taking advantage of the new 3D craze for the older 3D films. I hope to see more of them soon.

Anyone else hoping we get more BD3D releases of old 3D films for a classic collection bigger than Creature in the Black Lagoon, Friday the 13th Part 3 (no idea if that's old 3D or the new 3D) and Super Sentai World?

(Note 1: I don't BD3D equipment yet... emphasis on yet. )

(Note 2: Digital Cookie if you find out what or know what Super Sentai World is. )

Jaws 3-D will be out on 3DBR later this year. Amityville would be really cool! Also Friday the 13th pt 3 (in real 3D, not anaglyph)

Dial M for Murder was announced a week or so earlier and comes out a week after Creature. The same WB announcement mentions having the largest collection and that they expect to release House of Wax next. All obvious depends on if these older movies do well.

There were also hints earlier in the year that Jaws 3d would come out, but nothing recently. Some originally thought it would be out the same day with Jaws.

Sony sells a couple of their's on PSN, but not on Blu-ray.

It seems like most older films have stronger depth than most modern 3D films. I'm interested in seeing them. Bring on the 3D.

Close enough.

Before the news of Creature and Dial M (Didn't hear that one, but great) Super Sentai World was the oldest I knew of. Older than 2008 was what I was thinking of, emphasis on the 1950s but 80s too.

I was watching Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey on Quickflix the other day, and two references to 3D glasses throughout and the way Bogus came at me in the opening titles gave me the impression that it may have been released in 3D. Was it?
