Default Current Top of the Line Displays

Sorry, I haven't kept up in about 5 or more years, but want to start looking. Outside of the Sharp Elite, what are the current goto displays (not projectors) primarily for film reproduction (rather than sports, gaming, etc). Is the CNET roundup pretty accurate in terms of popularity? Wishlist is pretty basic 60"+, happy to sacrifice 3D (though this seems to be standard on a lot of the more expensive ones), and as I said will be used almost entirely for home theater use. Don't need specific recommendations, just a starting point from where to research. Many thanks!

The top Panasonic plasmas are still the best in my opinion. I much prefer them to the Sharp Elite. Their (Panasonic) 65" VT series is also cheaper than the Elite.

Outside of the Elite, Panasonic is probably going to give you the best picture quality and a pretty decent bang for your buck (vs the Elite). You could also look at Samsung. They JUST came out with their new line of plasmas. They are a better value than Panasonic but not quite as good PQ. Your last option would be a Sharp LED, I have a buddy who got a 70" Sharp LED from BestBuy for $1999. That would obviously be the most economical option and still get a decent picture.

Good luck

Stay away from the Sharp "Elites". Too many issues for such a high-priced set. The best displays continue to be plasmas in general, with Panasonic being the best of the bunch. The best "bang for your buck" set out there right now is the ST30 (IMO which is shared by many others around here and elsewhere).

You could also consider the Sony HX929, a LED with direct backlighting.

While "bang for your buck" is good, it's not the topic of the thread. As far as I know the only top of the line Panasonic's are the VX300,the VX200 and VT30. And that might be the order of preference too, with the VX models being the professional displays and the VT being the consumer model.

I would also say the Sony HX850 and HX750 HDTV's. Being an owner of an 46HX750 I vouch for it by saying its an excellent tv for the price and the features it offers which are many. And the PQ is out of this world!

By "top of the line" you mean picture quality? Start with the new Panasonic and Samsung plasma models. And for God's sake whatever you do, go and demo them! You'll be doing yourself a disservice if you don't test them out yourself before deciding. Good luck.
