Are there any other ColecoVision owners or fans here?
At the tender age of 12 (please don't do the math) I used my hard earned savings to buy my ColecoVision 28 years ago today! Why do I remember this? Because I thought I was going to die that day. I saved my money all summer knowing the system was coming out, by doing any chores or yard work I could find. I finally saved up by Christmas break, and to my horror, the system was sold out at all retailers in my area. There was no looking it up online, or having someone run a quick check of all stores in the computer system. Back in the day I actually had to call each individual store of each retailer separately and wait patiently while someone went back and checked stock. I couldn't find a ColecoVision anywhere. Then, as I trudged along with my parents through a local Bi-Mart, I saw it. Although I was earlier told the store had sold out, I saw the display ColecoVision sitting unboxed on the top shelf behind the electronics counter, buried under a bunch of crap. I then had to convince my parents to convince the store manager to sell me the open display model. They reluctantly did, and I just remember squirming while the manager packed everything back into the box, including my favorite game of all time, the Donkey Kong pack-in cartridge. So, I have now owned my ColecoVision for 28 years, and it is currently sitting boxed and on display in my game room. Along with Donkey kong, following were some of the favorites I owned: Expansion Module # 2, the racing wheel with Sega's Turbo Venture Cosmic Avenger Donkey Kong Jr. Subroc Only one other friend of mine, Brian Green, had a ColecoVision, so we used to swap games with each other. Most of my other friends had either the Atari 2600 or Intellivision. Many of them would come over and we would play ColecoVision all day long on the weekends. We couldn't believe a home system could have that many arcade games that were not far off from the originals So, are there any other ColecoVision fans out there? I hope so. I grew up in the arcades, so those games have always been my first love. That is why I love the ColecoVision, and then found that again with Sega's Dreamcast. Now, I have a few days off for Christmas break, and I think I'll have to set up the ColecoVision for a bit of very old, old school gaming. Happy Holidays! |
