Lightbulb Dreaming in Stereo 3D

This will no doubt sound strange to some who are skeptical of dreams and the human imagination to visualize in the mind's eye, but in the past month of April, my thoughts about stereo 3D have actually translated into a dream of seeing in stereo 3D within the dream itself. Normally I dream in 2D, but this was absolutely in stereo 3D to my dream vision. I was aware that I was dreaming, as it caught my attention so much that I was able to see the layering of the objects in 3D space, and moved my head around to see the shift, much like looking at a lenticular hologram cover of a blu ray 3D disc.

In the stereo 3D dream, there was a guy with a dark suit, black tie and mustache standing there, with slicked back black hair, almost like a vintage Hollywood movie star from the past, facing towards my direction. Clark Gable might be a good comparison, and I don't watch a lot of vintage Hollywood films too often, but have been doing more so thanks to 3-D Film Archives restoring so many 3D films recently.
It was kind of like a still frame, and he appeared to be in a restaurant setting, much like one of my favorite shots from another 3D film. There was no movement, but the 3D layers were strong, separating the objects as if really standing there, looking at the scene in 3D. The lighting was well lit, and the scene was somewhat colorful with maroon table cloths and other colors behind.

I was amazed that it was possible to dream in stereo 3D. This was the first time I had a dream in stereo 3D. I've had dreams where I was aware and in control of floating above the ground and then managing to fly into the air, and once I lost my fear (over many dreams), I was able to fly well above the ground without falling back down. One time over a wilderness forest with a hungry bear far below, but unable to catch me. But dreaming in stereo 3D, even for the few seconds that the dream lasted, was definitely a breakthrough for my dreams over the years.

I'll try to think about this before going to sleep each night, to see if I can replicate it. The sad thing is, there's no way to externalize our dreams as we're having them. No projector to see what is playing in the mind's eye.

The mind is amazing, so I'm interested to hear if anyone else has had a dream in stereo 3D. I bet there are some who dream all the time in stereo 3D, just as there are some who say they dream in black and white all of the time.

I too dream in stereo! I did so for the first time when I was in my mid-teens. I distinctly remember in that first stereo dream closing first one eye and then the other to confirm perspective shift. Yep, it was there.

One of my most amusing stereo dreams came about six or seven years ago. I dreamed I was watching a hitherto unknown 3-D film from 1954, with most of the period details absolutely correct. Even the Eastmancolor look of the dream was authentic. But the leading man was an out-of-left-field anachronism. Seems Paul Hogan of Crocodile Dundee fame was playing an American(!) who inherited a farm in Australia. Instead of selling it, as everyone expected, he decided to make a go of it. His only "help" came from a jovially lazy Ward Bond, wielding a put-on Irish accent like a heavy club and cheerfully pointing out Hogan's mistakes at every turn.

Somehow it made perfect sense in the dream-film for Paul Hogan to hang from barbed wire fences while repairing them. The barbed wire extended way forward of the screen plane.

I literally woke up laughing.

At various times in life I have kept a dream journal. If I persist, I come to remember more and more of my dreams, and the entries— while very amusing and bizarre— become longer and more involved. So, time after time, I give up dream-journaling for lack of time. But if any of you keep a dream journal, you just may discover to your astonishment that you too dream in stereo, at least some of the time.

Thanks for starting this fun topic, Zivouhr!

Hi Mike, I'm sorry for the delayed response. I'm so used to posting in the movie 3D forum that I sometimes forget to check back here.

That is awesome to hear that you dream in 3D. Thanks Mike. That dream sounds comical, glad to hear you were able to remember it so well with the character of Dundee in a 3D image.

Unless I think about it as soon as I get up, many times I forget what my dreams were about, as they vanish from memory it seems. The ones I did remember though, go all the way back to being a kid to today.

Yes, I have a small book I write dreams in that are worth remembering. Good idea.
Best way I can have a dream and remember it is to set my alarm clock for an hour before I have to wake up. If I hit snooze and fall asleep, I usually have a dream within that time, even within a short 10 minute span before the alarm clock sounds off again.

Now I just have to focus on having stereo 3D dreams more often. It was amazing to see that a dream can be in stereo 3D. Since then though, my dreams have been in 2D, so I need to concentrate a bit more. I'd like to have a stereo 3D dream walking through a jungle, with lots of plants to brush aside.

Hi guys,

Now that I recall, I have ocassionally dreamed in stereo too. I no longer remember the visual but still remember the physical feeling of height or distance when finding out I could fly on my own power, trying to see how much higher or faster I could get.

Awesome. Thanks Joe. That sounds cool. Yes, flying in dreams is a challenge but can be fun, especially in 3D I could imagine. Very good to hear you were also able to control your flight in the 3D dream.

For those wondering about all this, the best way to get a sense of what a 3D dream would be like, is to place a 3D object on a table in front of you, with one eye closed. That's normally how I dream, in 2D. But then that one dream, both eyes were working for the first time together, resulting in a stereo 3D image within the dream.

Dreams from Light Patterns of the Eyes?
One thing I did notice about dreams is they seem to be linked to a similar effect as when you stare at a bright light for a few seconds and then turn away, and see a trailing imprint of the light.
I woke up from a dream one morning, clearly focused on a yellow machine crane. As I opened my eyes, the crane disappeared, but the light image was an impression of the shape of the crane, as if looking at a bright light. That image faded shortly after.

Of course the question is, what is the value of dreams since they're so easy to forget. I believe they're a summary and mixture of daily events, goals, fears or concerns. But that's for another topic.

If I have any more 3D dreams, I'll post them here.
