Default ? regarding PS3 and Bitstreaming

I watched my netflix copy of Transformers this evening, I have my PS3 hooked up to an Onkyo 705 and KEF speakers/sub .... anyway I was switching back and forth between bitstream and PCM....and it seemed to play the Dolby Digital track louder and clearer on the PCM setting, does the PS3 decode it and upscale it when on the PCM setting vs. when it streams it to the receiver to decode?

well, they should both be identical...although the LPCM volume level may just be higher than if sent as bitstream. Try to match levels between the two.

Also, your receiver may be applying a different listening mode to the bitstream signal and maybe dialnorm, which can alter the way you hear it.

I was trying to ask that if, when the PS3 is set to PCM and the soundtrack is say Dolby Digital, does it decode it and try to upscale the audio , if it is even possible...

Sounds like that should be the next marketing gimmick. Upscale your dvd dolby audio to dolby true HD.

There's no point to that. You'll just degrade it further by recompressing it
