United Kingdom Torchwood Series 1-4

I need some advice.

I am in the US and I was perusing amazon.co.uk

I noticed that in November Torchwood Series 1-4 is coming out for about $74.00 US.

Since it was here in the US I have only seem Miracle Day and I loved it.

I am thinking of doing a blind buy of the whole Torchwood series, but I wanted some opinions. Since I really enjoyed Miracle Day would it be a safe bet as a blind buy?

Did the American transition if the series really change how the series was done, or are the previous seasons just as good?

I haven't watched the current STARZ season yet, but I can tell you that the first 3 seasons of the show are fantastic. I'm a US viewer and started watching Torchwood when it started due to being a current Doctor Who fan. I would easily recommend the entire Torchwood series as a blind-buy! I imported the 1-3 season blu-ray set of Torchwood a while back from Amazon UK and have pre-ordered season 4 from the UK as well. Can't wait to watch it!! I think Torchwood and Doctor Who continue to get better and better.

The first two seasons are more episodic in nature, more monster of the week stuff with the season archs in the background. Children of Earth is just one story like Miracle Day and was actually broadcast over a week Monday to Friday on the BBC.

Children of Earth is available quite cheap on Amazon (£6.99) on Region B but I think it is in 1080i 50hz so you should make sure your player can handle it.

I enjoyed Miracle Day and the setting was a fun change (Gwen Cooper got a new hair style) and I can't remember the last time I've seen so much spittle flying out of actors mouths (say it don't spray it Bill Pullman)....

I'd think you'd enjoy the earlier series just as much or even more than Miracle Day.

Children of the Earth is available here cheaply also. US stores that import want $95 for 1-3 (including CotE) so if I am going to get the past seasons it is definitely better to order the 1-4 set direct from amazon.co.uk since it also has Miracle day whcih I have not purchased yet. It is also labeled as region free.

Edit: I take that back..this site states B and C are untested. Are the previous UK releases of torchwood regiion B locked, or region free?

This edition looks like the UK version and it is region free

Amazon UK:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Torchwood-Co...7043763&sr=1-1

Amazon US:
http://www.amazon.com/Torchwood-Comp...044716&sr=8-15

How safe would it be to aswsume that 1.4 set is region free.

Is there a web site that does more with UK releases that would know if it was region free?

Season 1 isn't very good, as a spin-off from Doctor Who, they got very over the top with the sex, gore and what not. They had silly stories. Season 2 tones itself down a bit. Children of Earth is fantastic, and is far better than Miracle Day. I like Miracle Day, but it was very slow building, and a bit of a cop out ending.

Regardless of the UK's region status, I believe each episode is in 1080i 50hz, so unless your machine can handle PAL material, you're stuffed.

From what I have been reading the latest releases are NTSC. Are you referring to the latest releases and they are still PAL?

I'm really hoping that this isn't the final boxset design.

[Show spoiler]

Then again, with 3 weeks to go before release, I can't see 2|Entertain changing it so late in the process.

Also, when I go to the listing in the blu-ray collection database here, this thread isn't listed as the associating thread. Why is that?

What latest releases? as I can only find one release of each series which are all 1080i/50hz and that 1-3 boxset is just the standard releases in a box.

The pre-orders for Miracle day and the season 1-4 set. They are on amazon.co.uk and other sites. Their release date is November 14

Damn it. They got rid of the red and black slipcases for seasons 1 and 2.

EDIT: Would have been a great oppurtunity to have seasons 1-4 in a digipack type of packaging instead of having slipless amaray cases in a standard, larger, boring looking slipbox.

I wouldn't be surprised if Miracle Day is 1080p24hz but I fully expect the 1-4 set to include the previous releases of 1-3, wouldn't make much sense to change the material from its correct 1080i50hz.

Received my 1-4 Boxset yesterday, got fed up of waiting for ChoicesUK to get stock so just ordered it from BBCShop Sunday along with Doctor Who Series 6.

The picture on the side shows new packaging for Series 1 and 2 but I cant confirm this as it has now gone away till xmas.
