i didn't see this anywhere and was wondering if anyone is having the same issue. i currently have Oppo 83 & 93 blu-ray players as well as a PS3. i own the movie AvP (Alien Vs. Predator) and haven't watched it in quite a long time but love the movie.
i put it in to play today in the 93 and it didn't work; the player has the latest firmware too. same is true for the 83 and it didn't play there either. in the past we all go to the old faithful, always works in it PS3, same thing, it didn't work in there either. it never recognized the disc in any of the 3 players. so, it's not a player issue as all of my other disc that i have tried a couple of very recent and a couple of very old ones all worked. if anyone has had this happen, did you buy a new disc and everything worked just fine or what did you do to get it to play. remember, we are talking about the top machines that exist for playing blu-ray movies and it doesn't work in them so again, this is not a hardware issue. for all i know it would be the first time a blu-ray movie disc simply died (the disc itself). thanks for everyone who helps out with this one; first time i've ever had a disc that wouldn't play on all of my blu-ray players! ![]() |

I don't have AVP but thi very thing has happened to me with SPIDER-MAN 2 and I've read about plenty of people who've had the same problem over the years (though occasionally it was SPIDER-MAN 3 rather than 2); just won't play in any machine, some not recognising the data or just pixellating until frozen.
Strange. |

The same thing happened to my Australian remastered version of the Fifth Element released by Sony, which has now been discontinued here and a new version was rereleased by a different distributor last year. It's the only blu I own that has just stopped working altogether for no reason, though I've had other blu titles not work in both my ps3's after doing certain firmware updates, that all still work in my Oppo and Panasonic players perfectly.
When I discovered that the Fifth Element blu had stopped working I did a search on the Internet which took me about an hour to find info on 2 other Australian's that it had also happened too. I just put it down to a faulty batch. Last edited by Cevolution; 12-22-2011 at 11:22 PM. |

What's salient is that, on some occasions, there is (or was) a fault in the pressing that leads to a "time bomb"effect. Back in the days of "dvd rot", a lot of people reckoned it was down to the glue used to dual-layer the discs. |

Just curious how studios handle this kind of thing. |

i have not bothered to contact 20th century fox (i'm sure they would laugh their assess off if i asked for a replacement disc) about the AvP since it's been more than 2 years since i had the disc. i just haven't watched it in so long and found it incredibly odd that it wouldn't work (not even acknowledged) in 3 different players. like i said, i've watched it many times in the past with no problems either. |

I have had the opposite happen, like I tried three copies of Bambi when I 1st got it, it never worked, then out of the blue one day after a few months of having the disc it decided to work. Same with the english version of the Leopard, didn't want to watch it but wanted to see the pq, it wouldn't play, and then 6 months later started up in my player just fine, and ever since its been fine, and I had all the newest firmware and everything

I just tried my copy of AVP on my ancient LG BH200 (which is a blu-ray/HD DVD combo player). It booted up pretty quickly and plays fine. I agree-pretty good movie. Sorry to hear your copy no longer works.

Might not apply here, but in case it helps: when I got Starship Troopers I couldn't get it to load. I searched around on the web and someone suggested attaching a portable flash drive to the back of my player. Sure enough, it loads with no problem now. If you have an input for a flash drive on your player you may want to try that.

The disc has most likely failed somehow.
Unfortunately , I've had the same problem with Watchmen Ultimate, LA Confidential and one of the Blade runner discs. For some reason they just suddenly fail even though they played flawlessly the day before!! ![]() |

Remember when optical media came out (during the 1980's) one of the benefits was a shelf life of 30-50 years? I guess that is if you author the disk and not the Hollywood studios. Maybe this should be called Blu-ray Divx. :P

Be sure that BD-Live or Internet connection is being made for the disk by your player. Also, you might had data stored for AvP on your PS3. Sometimes that area gets corrupted and you need to purge it. Not sure about the Oppo, but it may be worth a try to look at what your settings are. The PS3 for sure has problems with the Internet connection isn't there for some discs. I would also go to your BD settings and change some stuff there...it always helps to fiddle around with things =) Sony has added a ton of stuff which might be conflicted with the disc. Maybe turn on/off 24Hz ![]() I read with AVP-R that people were having the exact same problem. Their solution was to go to your BD/DVD settings under System Settings and adjust your 24Hz ouput settings. Apparently a very Common Problem for some blu-rays. ![]() |
