Default Sunfire, Velodyne, Definitive Technology. Please, Help! I need a small footprint sub!

Hello,

First, thanks for stopping by and taking a look at my thread.

I currently own an Outlaw LMF-1 Plus subwoofer, which has made me very happy throughout the years, but its time for a change. The change is, instead of running one larger sub, I'd like to run two smaller subs. The width of the Outlaw is, I believe 15" and I have about 28" to play with. With that said, I was looking at Minivees by Velodyne, Supercubes by Definitive Technology, and Sunfire Juniors, etc.

Any other suggestions? Should I do dual subs with a smaller footprint or an even bigger single sub? I have read numerous articles and I'm familiar with a lot of the brands (SVS, Epik, HSU, etc).

My budget is $1200 or so, with the assumption I can get a couple hundred for the Outlaw.

This is used for 80% music and the only videos I watch are concert blu ray videos. No movies or gaming.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you,

D

I vote for two subwoofers. Two good subwoofers will outperform one in a small home theater. With one subwoofer, even a big scary one, you will get uneven bass across the room. At some spots, you will get too much bass and at other spots you may get almost no bass. Two subwoofers will even out the bass across the room. They can also increase the total level of bass. That means you can lower the level of each subwoofer and decrease the chance of subwoofer over extension or damage.

There are many good subwoofers around. The ones you mentioned are very good, but they may be a bit expensive. If you decide to buy two subwoofers and at the same time you don't want to go bankrupt, I suggest you buy two Earthquake subwoofers. The list price of each is almost $700, but you can buy each sub for $350 plus free shipping.

I'd head straight to SVS and get a pair of SB12-NSD subs. They would be hard to beat no matter what, but if it's mostly for music then I suspect you'll like them even more.

Also look into the the Rhythmik f-12 se. One is within your budget. Two would be a little over. These are gorgeous subs with great sound.

Default Velodyne MicroVee 6.5

Was browsing the net looking for option on subs. I will be rearranging my room and the spot where I would want to place it is unfortunately rather tight. The MicroVee 6.5 came up on many sites. The specs are totally nuts for a 9" cubic cabinet. At this size, two would be a breeze. Can these things be as good as what I read, damn 1Kw RMS

Ok, your requirements are small, music only subwoofer. That leaves out the regular sub contenders such as SVS, HSU, ect. as they have big subs!!!

I think 2 of the Rel T-5's will fit right down your alley
http://www.musicdirect.com/m-104-rel...tdirection=ASC

Here are the dimensions: Dimensions (WHD) 10.5x12x 11.75"
Small enough for you? Cost is 699.00 each. just a hair over budget for 2 of them. Extension down to 23hz. They have excellent pacing with music. I think they will fit the bill.

That's not bad!!! I didn't think they were that small, but under 15 inches on any dimension...that's great!

The reason I was looking for info on the MicroVee (and MiniVee) is that the only spot I have for a 2nd sub is under a corner table with low clearance. I figured with 1kw even a 6.5" should be decent (all things considered)

If you are interested in very small and high quality subwoofers, you should consider one or two Sunfire True Subwoofers. As far as small size is concerned, Nobody Does It Better except James Bond.

They do look to be awesome, but I should've mentioned that I was looking at the MicroVee because of it's price point.

Very, very nice subwoofers, but just a tad over budget. I think each subwoofer with shipping would put me at $950.00 each. Thanks for the suggestion though!

I agree, I was at their website and I can't find better numbers for a better price. That's a awesome deal too because they knock off about $150.00 buying a pair.

Of all the subwoofers on the market (within reason) THIS subwoofer has to be at the top of my list. It has been suggested to me in almost every subwoofer post I've ever had. I can certainly find them on Audiogon for $600.00 range, but would they be as good for music when comparing them to the SB12-NSD? I have heard SVS subwoofers and I know that if I buy the pair I will be happy, but I've never had the privilege of demoing Sunfire, which has me wondering? What if....

With that said, the pair at SVS has set the bar.

Probably not. The Sunfire subs achieve their output using massive amounts of cone excursion, which by it's very nature introduces distortion. There are ways to mitigate that to a certain extent, but it can't be eliminated. I also find it hard to justify their prices; while they offer a lot, I don't think they offer quite that much (relative to the competition).

Myself personally, I would choose the SB12 regardless of what it was to be used for; movies and/or music. When the price is factored in it becomes an even a better deal in my eyes.
