Saw this in a cinema almost 2 decades ago. It had some powerful moments and was like a Shakespearean drama, but I doubt I will be re-visiting it.

By the way, Italian is considered the default language of this film?
I see most actors were Italian so this is the best way to watch the film?
Or maybe in English because the main stars talk English?
(i wouldn't like to hear DeNiro or Lancaster etc. dubbed)

I really am confused with such bilingual cast films.

With this movie, I would say English is preferred. I haven't watched it in a while, but De Niro, Depardieu, Hayden, Lancaster and Sutherland are all speaking English (for Depardieu, at least most of the time), and I think even Dominique Sanda spoke English, too. Certainly, all of these actors are dubbed in the Italian-language version, though Depardieu and Sanda would have dubbed themselves in French. And clearly, Bertolucci had to direct these stars in English on set, too.

That's not to say the Italian track is without merit, though. Obviously, most of the cast is speaking Italian, and the film is set in Italy, which is also where it was shot. I think it's great to have both options, but I would watch it in English first, if you have the choice.

Probably not. The Olive master came from Paramount, but Eureka's master is probably a different one, since they've doubtless licensed the film from Fox (MGM) who has it in the UK and much of Europe.

It was banned in South Africa for years. It was eventually unbanned and uncut but with a 21 age restriction in the mid 1980's. I saw it then and was absolutely bowled over. The one performance that stood out for me was Donald Sutherland. He was so unamhamedly evil and he relished it. Overall, the lead performances were really good, but Sutherland. Brilliant. Not light viewing, this needs a major investment of your time and commitment. It's worth it.

My guess would be that MoC will make use of the HD restoration which MGM (on behalf of UA) licenced to Dall'Angelo in Italy in 2011. It looks wonderful - the set, which seems now to be OOP, also has a restoration documentary on a second SD disc - and that is even though the film proper is squeezed on to one BD. But I notice that the Eureka is to be spread across two, which should provide room for even more detailed resolution. The Italian release had both the Italian and English audio versions, but - naturally enough for a domestic release - only Italian subtitles, whilst the MoC will presumably allow you to watch the Italian dub with English titling, a useful option for the UK.

Still remains to be confirmed if this will be cut (for animal cruelty reasons) or not.

I might be mis-remembering, but I don't think there are any animal cruelty issues with this film. In fact, I don't believe that there have been any issues with the film for years in the UK. IMDb claims the original 1992 UK VHS of the long version is missing the dueling hand jobs scene (why, I can't imagine, the submission seems to have been uncut, but perhaps the tape was zoomed-in) and otherwise, it's since been just an uncut '18' in both the short and long versions since the first video release.

Duel hand job scene? Pre-ordered!

But serious, is this recommended to someone who has no knowledge of this film at all?

There are lots of Hollywood legends in it, and if you enjoy Bertolucci, go for it, as this is one of his masterpieces. If you've not seen any of Bertolucci's films, though it's probably not the best starting point, unless you really love European drama epics where every soundtrack is dubbed in.

Hmm, I just ordered the US one from DeepDiscount (theres a 10% off sale) with 3 discs and it was in stock. It is split across 2 Blu-ray discs with the documentary on the third disc (DVD). I hope I wasn't too hasty.

On the Dall'Angelo blu ray I have, there is a fairly harrowing and drawn out pig slaughtering sequence. The film is portraying rural peasantry, but my own opinion is that it's rather unnecessary.

I can't watch it.

I love Once Upon A Time in America, if it's at all similar to that. And from Bertolucci, I thought The Conformist is one of the all time greats. Is there any other recommended starting place?
