Blackthorn Blu-ray Review

Magnolia Pictures has revealed that it will release on Blu-ray Spanish director Mateo Gil's (writer, Open Your Eyes, Agora) Blackthorn (2011), starring Sam Shepard, Eduardo Noriega, and Stephen Rea. Exact technical spec and region coding status for this release are unknown at the moment, but the preliminary release date set by the studio is December 20th.

It's been said (but unsubstantiated) that Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid were killed in a standoff with the Bolivian military in 1908. In Blackthorn, Cassidy (Shepard) survived, and is quietly living out his years under the name James Blackthorn in a secluded Bolivian village. Tired of his long exile from the U.S. and hoping to see his family again before he dies, Cassidy sets out on the long journey home. But when an unexpected encounter with an ambitious young criminal (Noriega) derails his plans, he is thrust into one last adventure, the likes of which he hasn't experienced since his glory days with the Sundance Kid.

Worth a blind-buy? Just saw the preview on Tucker & Dale vs Evil and it peaked my interest. No other responses to this post but mine, so I'm thinking no ....

I've seen it. It's decent if you are a big fan of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, the famous movie. The acting performances are all very good. Is it worthy of a blind buy? Probably not, at its current price is a little too risky to blindly recommend to others. If you like straight Westerns, wait until it dips in price.

Just a correction for the review:

Quote:
The always-excellent Sam Rockwell gets to curse like a Deadwood character and this is cause for some unexpected moments of comedy
That should be Sam Shepard.

Also an interesting point regarding the making off doco - it is all in Spanish with subtitles (INCLUDING the actual film footage - where we hear Sam Shepard and co with their dubbed voices).

Overall an enjoyable film and nice BD package.
